Handling Downvotes

Public is fine. Always good to know who downvotes the carpet cleaning ads!
Exactly - don't downvote - that's just a waste - simply report them.

By having both invisible all the potential drama is completely avoided.
It doesn't. The downvotes will have the same drama. The issue won't be addressed.
Remove downvotes all together then. If you have personal downvotes the drama will increase for sure. If you have problems now, it will become worse.
The question is what the downvote actually means. Is it a thumbs down on you or a disagreement with what you said?
Ultimately this is my wondering?
Do people, IT people, actually pay attention to the number of up/down votes when reading these threads?
I rarely upvote, let alone downvote something... perhaps I'm not helping ML as much as I could by not voting on every bloody thing

Here is how I use votes in general:
Upvote = I agree or I see your post and acknowledge it, but it doesn't necessitate me typing a full post to reply
Downvote = I disagree with what you said, but I don't want to invest the time arguing with you (for a variety of reasons)It might change how/when I use downvoting initially if it is public. I don't do it often, but anonymity makes it too easy. It probably would change how I use it because if it is public it would give the downvotee the visibility to challenge me for negatively responding without feedback. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing.

Some, for sure. When I see lots of upvotes I take more notice of a post. Just one, no. but like four or more.

I know admins can see who downvotes posts, including their own.
How has that effected the turnout of threads for those who have been able to see them all along?

And that's kinda the point of just upvoting a post. Removing the need for spam like us

We can always turn it off again, so let's have a go with visible downvotes.
It will show if someone is on a targeted downvote crusade to lower reputation of one specific user... which we've had before. -

If you click the counter there's a popup with the breakdown.

Votes should be public now.
On the condition that meta bitching about who downvoted you should be a ban
