So once the rebrand hits, if we have any heated debates can we call them "RoIT Rage?"

Wow, I haven't heard Republic of IT for quite awhile. Glad to see it coming back. Is this a partnership with @Nic or something else? (Still watching the video so you might answer it in the video and this is redundant)

Jokes aside, this is actually a very informative video. Thanks @scottalanmiller! Kind of a drag that it happened in the first place but at least something positive was able to be birthed from the whole situation. I still am a definite SW-fanboy and hope that despite the latest news and any previous shortcomings that they find a way to continue to exist and grow.

It was. It was a functional community for several years. I was a member.

                      Good overview Scott. Thanks.

Although I still think the domain name we picked at the last MangoCon is still fitting. 🙂

Wow- I did not know any of that. Very informative. Thanks!!
I just jumped over from Spiceworks myself. While I remain hopeful that things will continue to grow (or just exist) over there, I'm preparing for the worst.

Well, the "worst" already happened - they went apeshit banning long standing members of the community for having opinions or for calling BS on a sales rep's post. Maybe things will actually improve now that they're owned by a company that knows their ass from a hole in the ground... but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know if I'd call it the worst, as my blood pressure has dropped significantly since being told to leave.

Actually I'm really confident that the things that most of us have liked least about them will improve. Probably a lot. ZD has a lot of reason to "fix" what we saw as broken. Now, I also suspect that a lot of other things will change that people may or may not like, like a change in focus, change in editorial style, addition or removal of certain media content, changes in ad placement and so forth. But more "I liked how it was before" type stuff, tuning issues, whereas I think the things we saw as "really bad" will probably get ironed and probably relatively quickly.

For the record, at 10:30 in the video you talk about the original RoIT site failing. It was never released to the public as such, we played around with the idea of it for a while but setting up a non-profit entity and all that's involved in that was way more work and money than we'd originally thought. We decided not to go forward with the project since but I don't think that really counts as failing. I'm glad someone pointed to the WBM link, I had forgotten that we'd made the domain name into a rick roll, that made me smile. 😄
