Can someone explain to me how line item 2 in any way correlates to the job being requested? This job description that I just got in my email is a joke...

Maybe they are wanting someone that has Cisco routing experience who can work well with Linux / Unix systems. Sounds like a typical admin job really.

This sounded pretty specific to being a Unix/Linux administrator, as the title describes. It's just weird. I get having networking experience but CCNA is too specific.

AJ, maybe they use Cisco for their network. And they'd like someone who is capable of working on it all. Just in case "joe" is sick. Are you trying to be a purist snob?

They need to change the job title or give more background then. Yes, I can be a bit of a purist snob!

They should either say this is a Systems Administrator Job for an SMB or keep it a linux administrator and drop the CCNA

they dont need to do anything. They will get an applicant who can handle everything they are asking for. If you dont want to dabble in cisco, or you're not comfortable with learning it, just dont apply. why post it on this forum? what do you want us to say? "AJ, you're right!!! who needs cisco? who needs networks? nobody.

Not the point. I was arguing about the poor labeling of what they want as opposed to what people will expect when they see the title. That's all. Jeez......

@Hubtech basically, if you want someone with a CCNA, required or not, if it's on a job description, the title Unix/Linux Administrator goes right out the Window. That's not what a person of that role would need to have. All I was saying was that their job title and description didn't line up to what is reality. Drop the CCNA or change the job title. That simple.

You're missing the point. What they want is NOT a Linux administrator. They can call it what it is, a Sys Admin, and specify they want a heavy Linux background and a CCNA. That would be accurate. The current title is a complete misnomer and will throw off a lot of people. The employer ultimately suffers because viable candidates will skip over the job and non-viable ones will apply and waste time and resources. It's a lose-lose.

It's the title. They don't ask for a single cert related to being a Linux Admin but require a cert exclusively for Cisco Network work. It really is a bit odd. The description seems all Linux and the title is right... except for that one line. It's okay to want that, but it seems very odd that they require certification for something outside the job title and not a cert for the job itself.
