Dell Hot Swap 2.5" drive in place of 3.5"
-
Well, Dell stated it was going to be overnight but the drive just showed up about 5 minutes ago. They also mentioned that it was going to be a 3.5" drive. It turns out they sent me a 2.5" UGH.'
Best guess, the 3.5's are no longer out there. It is pretty old after all. I'm guessing I should get confirmation from Dell that these are same logically (don't know the right word) vs physically.

Those drives are 100% out there. Dell screwed the pooch.
I would get something in writing that Dell intended for you to use this drive or not use it.

Currently on with Dell Chat. I will get a email with that if they confirm it.

Received confirmation from Dell support rep that they only stock 2.5" drives in this size, there are no reported issues with this type of replacement and all should be well.
Well, we are going to find out later tonight when users log out.

We have used 2.5" from dell to replace a 3.5" in a failed raid many times with no issues. Like @JaredBusch said, though, double check that backup first, even though the drive came early, it's premature to drop it in.....

Good to know, Thanks for the info.
Been checking the backups, plus the backups I've been doing throughout the day.
Big issue is the one server is constantly in use. Will backup when everyone is off, check it, then replace the drive tonight.

I've also done it. But not on anything under warranty support. I've no issues with the technical functionality. But when it is warranty, then I want it done to not lose said warranty.

Just an update.
As was hoping, replacement of 3.5" with 2.5" SAS went fine and now a few weeks later another HD is in Predictive Failure (Same RAID 10 Group).
Tomorrow morning the server will be rebooted to set the disk offline and then replaced with another 2.5" drive from Dell.
Just wondering if others experience the same multiple failed/predictive failure issues in a relatively short amount of time?
My view, as this is the second time this has happened on different servers, yes this can happen often as drives are of the same age so it can be expected.
Kinda like your driver side headlight goes out so you know the passenger has a high probability of going out soon also.

It's not uncommon at all. Your other drives are most likely to fail during a rebuild due to the added stress of continual access during this process.
That's what makes something like RAID 5 on spinning rust so scary. If all of the drives in the array are of similar age and from the same batch, I'd plan on swapping them all within the next while as each successive rebuild takes its toll on the remaining drives.

Agreed - and double check those backups.

I do agree with this. That is especially why I am happy I setup a RAID 10.
I still have support for this server yet so it is nice getting replacement drives. This server is about to go away soon so I just need it to last until support is out.

I have doubled and tripled checked. Did a couple restores today with single files and also entire VM's. (Currently using Veeam)
