What the world? No user backup script
-
I find this seriously difficult to understand and believe.
With nearly 2,000 systems in 2 builds and all the rest in the states core, there isn’t a script of some kind to backup the user data to the server!
FFS people- even I prefer scripts!

Not even redirecting folders? FML

As I look to script something up, it is likely better to use Powershell over simple batch - yes?
PS would have tools to query ADUC and provide more logic than batch, but I have little experience with PS...
And of course each agency, company , etc will have differences to account for. So there will be some obvious adjustments over general user dox, fav, pix, etc.

Let me guess. Nobody uses the network shares either?

Why not use something like UrBackup rather than recreating the wheel with custom scripts?

Especially when it's in the Chocolaty repo. Just script the install and configuration!

Many aspects of Chocolatey are blocked. I tried to install Greenshot and it failed.
It’s the state- which has a high number of limiting GPOs and such.
Scripts are also restricted... to a degree.

Ugh, hope you find a job somewhere reasonable quick!

Does the company want user device data backups or do they want to push network shares or one/Googledrive?
Were they already under the impression user device data was already backed up?
Do you redirect the documents folder?
Group policy, Etc...
Depends on a lot.

yep.. all of that and more.
In this day and age - and they have data that matters on the endpoint?

In this one building we have I think about six different agencies. Many are highly mobile, and are in the field a lot (Dept of Energy, Water, Forestry, etc)
We had a case today of a user 'complaining' of how slow her computer was. Turns out she was trying to access email in her PST file over the VPN. A 15GB PST file.
Employees could access email, or Scanned documents, Surveys - GIS or other data. So,.. 'always on the server' isn't 'always' going to work.
Being that it's the state, scripts are controlled. I can't run some simple batch scripts without elevation, and then that changes the 'accessed' folders making the script fail.

I took this as a stop gap. But it's what I have now, and what I have to work with. Just trying to improve and make the best of it while here.
