      This is a pretty new technology that I have not been hearing much about yet. Should be interesting.

            I recall hearing about this last year, but didn't give it much thought.

            That said, something new in IOS 8 that I LOVE is that when an iDevice is not paired with a WIFI network, it randomly changes it's MAC address while simply 'searching' for networks. This makes it must more difficult for you to be tracked via MAC. Of course once you try to pair with said WIFI network, the system drops back to the assigned MAC and makes the association.

                though after talking to another friend about this, I recalled that in the same breath I heard about this random MAC thing, I also heard about iBeacon.

                This makes me think that Apple didn't create the random MACs out of any concern for privacy of it's users, but instead as a way to sell iBeacon. Today companies that want to track based on WIFI MACs can do it essentially free (they have to buy some hardware but there are no licenses to worry about), going forward if you want to track iPhones/iPads, etc you'll have to buy Apples iBeacon.

                  Yeah, we use these at my wifes store for customer loyalty etc. target marketing. LoyalBlocks is the name of the service. it's neat!
