So it has to do with Fedora using kernel 4.x compare to RHEL/CentOS using kernel 3.10?
Ok, is this a solvable issue?
Haven't we already established this?
Use CentOS since Fedora isn't operable on this board.
We've established nothing :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Waiting to hear back from SM support!Does SM build Fedora? How will they fix a kernel issue for you?
They "expected" Fedora 24 -29 to install...
Nothing in their compatibility list would indicate that they've even tested with Fedora since F23.
Yesterday, when I spoke with them, they told me they "expected" F29 to work.
This AM, they sent me email asking me to install F24.
So we're back to the solution that was provided to you several days ago.
No, they are in the process of doing some testing.
Okay.

F24 isn't acceptable at all. that's crap. That's so far out of support, what a mess.

WTF, that's ridiculous.

I don't understand WTF Supermicro has to do with this. It's a Fedora problem, not a Supermicro problem. RHEL 7.5 installed fine, so case closed.

That said, I think the problem is related to UEFI boot or settings for the hard drives in bios or something around that. Or the flash drive if it's run from USB. Starting switch root is when the real root filesystem is mounted during the boot process. I'd also let it sit there for at least 15 minutes to make sure it really is stuck and doesn't spit out an error message.
And I'd also wipe the disk you're trying to install to, so it doesn't have any hidden partitions or disk signatures that tricks the installation program.

So to my point however long ago, why are you still looking to SM to fix an issue that Fedora would be responsible to resolve.

To some degree it is no both parties. SM only tests their hardware compatibility years back. No question, Fedora should be doing more testing on old hardware than the hardware vendors. But this isn't a one sided issue. SM isn't making their side of the effort here, either. I doubt SM is reporting to Fedora that there is an issue. If 23 is the last version that they checked, and it worked, Fedora might not know.
-
@scottalanmiller that doesn't matter.
It is what was listed so is a reasonable assumption that anything Fedora <current> isnt tested on this board.
So either send it to the Fedora team to see if anyone there wishes to troubleshoot, or look at a different distro.
To this point I don't think this has been answered, why the fixation on Fedora?

Right, that's what I am saying. It is reasonable to assume that SuperMicro isn't testing their boards like we expect that they should. Hence the problem.
We expect vendors to keep testing their hardware against all new versions of relevant, supported OSes during the life of the product.

the issue here is that SM has clearly stopped testing completely. For about three years, no testing. Look at the matrix, all kinds of things are missing.

If we go by this chart, and assume that nothing past this chart works, what OS do you expect to use? Here is a quick list of what is listed but NOT current on the testing list...
CentOS / RHEL, Fedora, Windows 10, Suse Linux, Ubuntu, Oracle Linux, FreeBSD...
In fact, except for Solaris, there is no testing of any current OS whatsoever.

CentOS 7 apparently worked. Somewhere up above he reported it as installing without issue.

Will try the install with another disk, I'll be sure to Secure Erase before use.

SM is in the process of testing with F29.
They will let me know tomorrow, no guarantees! -
@FATeknollogee just out of curiosity, does ubuntu 18.10 or 18.04 boot and install successfully?

Not surprised, I bet that there is a relatively universal update that is affecting everything.
