Web host for my own wedding site...
-
Any host will give you all that you are looking for. GoDaddy, BlueHost, HostMonster,.. etc.
But - why a Static IP? I have four sites running off my hosting, and I don't have a static IP for any of them.
If you want to use your laptop at home,.. you'll have to leave it on all the time. And run a service like DynDNS.

I just assume that if I buy a domain name, for example: www.myweddingjim2020.com and point that to a webserver at 197.x.x.x, if the IP changes the site wont load?

There are a lot of options, word press, squarespace, Apache server hosted on vultr.
You likely don't have any static IP addresses available at your residence. So going hosted will be a good option.
I think officially my ISP says the IP may change, but in the four years i've had it the IP address has been the same. I still dont want to use that option though.

Where can I pickup a cheap domain?

Some will suggest that you need to keep the Host and the Registrar separate.. But for a personal site I don't see the need.
My host is Host Monster.. as is my Registrar. I think I pay about $120 a year for hosting and Domains for four sites...
You can get it cheaper when you purchase more years..

Did you manage to get in? I've been on the waiting list for months and even paid to be moved up, and they've not opened to me yet.

I have all my personal stuff hosted on a full server I rent. DNS is handled by cloudflare, and hostname by tucows.

Not yet, but if this guy is just getting ready it could be a valid option.
Also, you have not been waiting months. The service has not been available that long.

I've been waiting months since they announced it. It is, AFAIK, not available at all yet.

Announced on Sept 27, so, you win. Months (plural) barely. 73 days, 2.5 months.

What do you lot think so far? Started an hour or two ago.
http://82.13.39.198/validate/demo/index.asp
I have not developed anything for a long time (over 10 years), so its not pretty. I'll make it pretty later, including improved wording, and some nice images of our venue.
You should only be able to get through the verify initial page with the code 'abc' or 'def' at the moment...
What do you think? My fiancee doesnt like the idea of including the menu in all the invites, or having each person to call us, email, text or post back - so wants a webpage where they all have a code to enter and select their meal...

You didn't listen. Don't do this. Use Wordpress and some plugins.

Why? Like I said, i'm doing this partly for fun as mentioned in the OP (nostalgia from years ago, specifically). So why use wordpress? I'm not interested in wordpress or plugins and didnt ask for that on my OP.

I hate to be that guy and I know you said you want to host your own wedding site, but there are services that makes it easier like WeddingWire and The Knot.
-
I agree with Jared on this, Why invent the wheel, plenty of plugins to use with Wordpress. Plus if you haven't developed code for a long time security comes into play as well.
If you don't want to use WordPress there are other sites out there that specialise in this like @black3dynamite has posted.

It's not for commercial use and he wants to learn or practice something specific. If this was for a business, I'd concur. But it's not, it is for fun. So doing what he is doing is fine. The extra time or effort are not negatives in this case.

ASP is a negative 100%.
