      Vultr's reply...

      Hello,

It does not seem that any other guests on the host are using an excessive amount of CPU power.

First, I would check your configurations on your running services to see if anything is out of the ordinary. If all seems to be in check, we can migrate your instance to a new host to see if that resolves the issue.

Let us know your findings and how you'd like to proceed.

Have em move it and see if that fixes the issue. Nothing in what you've shown seems excessive so make them do some work as a means of troubleshooting.

Yeah, it's not like that's going to be more than clicking a button for them.

Can't remember where I saw it but some company with a lot of cloud instances were using scripts that would automatically kill an instance and start it on another server if it started being slow. They found that once it start getting slow it would never recover it's original speed and get back to it's former self so this is how they solved it. You never know what else is running on the same host and how many VMs.

Can you yourself someway force the instance to move to another host on vultr?

There is no web interface for that. I'd be surprised if the API had it.

@scottalanmiller How about if you take a snapshot, then kill the instance and then restore. Will it end up on the same host?

I'm not a vultr user so I'm just guessing here :smiling_face_with_open_mouth:

@bnrstnr Something is not right in CPU land there. Can you see what process(es) are eating your CPU time?

Is there something better than top/htop to visualize the processes?

              I use Glances

Me too. Or Netdata when I need even more.

So, this morning I requested that they migrate my instance to a new host and they came back with this:

                  Hello,

We have detected a system issue with the node hosting the instances listed above. Our engineering team applied system updates and scheduled a brief maintenance window to perform a node restart. Once rebooted we expect your server performance to return to normal.

                  Date and Time:

                  Dec-06-2018 08:00 UTC (Dec-06-2018 03:00 Local Time)

Please note: This event will reboot your affected instances. Your data and configurations will not be affected by the reboot.

Why should you have to wait?

Probably because instead of migrating me they're going to just reboot the host? They're just scheduling maintenance to give the other users on that host a heads up?

I would prefer they just migrate me, but if they say that they've discovered an issue and will fix it, then I guess that's good with me, too.

Right - but you have a problem NOW. As such, assuming you can afford the downtime now to migrate to a new host, why wait? Unless all hosts have this problem, and they will be rolling this patch out globally? Just seems odd that you have to continue to suffer, days after you first reported a possible problem.

I don't disagree with you. If it were totally broken I would definitely push harder, but I can live with a slow web interface for another day. This problem is pretty low priority for me right now.

This morning my instance is snappy as expected. All pages load almost instantly again. Woo hoo!

Only took the better part of a week to get this resolved. . .

haha I honestly didn't even reply to their message until yesterday. The slow resolution was definitely all on me.

Here's an updated shot of glances
