Web hosting: today's recommendation

Once upon a time, the community was big on ASO & then A2 Hosting....
Just like the progression from XS to KVM, CentOS to Fedora 2x...
Where are we with web hosting?

I'm using Dreamhost and really like it.

ASO and A2 are both still good options. I've used both and would recommend either one. A2 is optimized for WordPress. So if you're going that route, keep that in mind. ASO is fantastic and the speed there is good as well. Essentially you get an extra caching feature with A2, but ASO offers litespeed which is comparible.

It's all going to be dependent on what you want. For my personal stuff I use GitLab pages and Hugo.

Big fan of Go language?

I run Hostadillo. If you are looking for specifically WordPress hosting. Four layers of cache, good deployment density. SSL is included. We handle the DNS and CDN stuff, and cache plugin coordination. White glove.

A2 also has good pricing for Windows based hosting if you want/need that.

Don't forget Cloudways, too.

We build our own moving away from ASO. Performance wasn't that great.

@scottalanmiller did some performance testing a few years back. https://mangolassi.it/topic/8520/serverbear-performance-comparison-of-rackspace-digital-ocean-linode-and-vultr. I wonder what changes we've seen since?
Linode, Digital Ocean, and Vultr have always been top of the list for VPS at least. Hosted services is imagine they be decent for as well, but I've never used them for that

We need a new test, since ServerBear is gone. GeekBench, maybe.

We use Vultr behind Hostadillo for a reason. It is crushing both DO and Linode in performance, and leads them in pricing, too. They recently dropped their prices to match, but not until Vultr had been cheaper (about half the price) for most of a year.

We found that if you use PHP, CentOS requires a bit of extra management, stuff that makes CentOS no longer make sense, to get good performance. Getting PHP 7.2, for example, on CentOS, negates the reason to use CentOS in the first place.
Fedora gave us way better perforamnce.
What caching layers are you using?

How do you like Centos web panel? Did you migrate from cpanel?

Isn't it actually Control Web Panel? Their domain is CentOS, btu the product is COntrol. I'm guessing that they got a court order telling them to change since that is obviously using a trademark.

That might be the case. Most or the reading I've done has referred to it as CentOS web panel. The name may have changed recently. Idj

Been control for several years, I think. I tried it out a number of years ago.

If you do a search on control web panel vs Centos web panel. You got many more threads of people talking about the product. Even official documentation refers to it as CentOS web panel.
