      You could try DISM from the command line

      I forgot, did that last night. Didn't affect anything 😞

          Looks like the machine is hosed.

            You could try
            chkdsk /f /r c:
            but it certainly looks bad.

              The situation is that I am working on a users desktop, Windows 10. She asked me to look at it because it had been off for a few days and when she powered it on and started using it, when she was in Outlook should could not get it to open or follow any hyperlinks. I looked at it and sure enough, if you click a link from Outlook nothing happens. But you can copy it, paste it into Chrome, and it works fine.

              I tried going into settings to see how things were and discovered that while I can open the Start Menu, the Settings button doesn't do anything. It shows that I click it, but the Settings never open.

              Tried opening Settings from the CLI, it does not open, either.

              Virus is the first guess, of course, but wondering if there are other good possibilities. Working on it is exceptionally hard because it is remote and some key things don't seem to work or respond.

              Install Windows and Application Updates, then reboot and if issue continue check for profile corruption.

              How, I can't open the settings.

              I tried from the command line, too:

              wuauclt.exe /updatenow 'wuauclt.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

              That command is deprecated, try this in Powershell
              (New-Object -ComObject Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate).DetectNow()

                  That returns immediately without any feedback.

                    I managed to get it to reboot and run updates. Fingers crossed, it appears to be improving, maybe.

                      Just finished with lots of updates and I think that it might be working. I've asked the end user to give it a try and let me know if it is fixed or not. But from what I can tell, it is way better.

                          User confirmed, it appears to be working. Edge isn't working, but it's not needed. Just made Chrome the default and everything that was remaining was fixed. Thanks everyone, looks like it is good now.
