I ran across this article this morning showing a comparison of the biggest players in public DNS including CloudFlare's new 1.1.1.1 product. Interesting article.

      https://medium.com/@nykolas.z/dns-resolvers-performance-compared-cloudflare-x-google-x-quad9-x-opendns-149e803734e5

I am curious if CloudFlare will continue to outperform its competitors, or if this is something that they're doing relative to their launch. Another question I had was how they are monetizing this. It is great that they are providing the service, but if they're not doing any logging and tracking who is the product?

CloudFlare makes lots of money. They already run some of the biggest DNS infrastructure. They don't need to directly monetize this. The advertising alone pays for it.

That makes sense. It sounds like you're saying that they're leveraging their existing infrastructure to generate goodwill and positive press, is that correct?

This is an important question to consider, but it is also important to not forget about traditional sales, marketing, and loss leaders. Companies like Facebook spending billions a year with their only revenue being selling your data is very different from a giant CDN that makes plenty of money selling security and performance to websites who tacks on a trivial service that makes their lives easier, improves quality for their customers, and gets their name in front of more potential customers.

So looking at it from comparison....

One is big money, no revenue except selling data.

Other is tiny money, other revenue is already established and this is an obvious marketing channel.

Unlike FB, CloudFare actually makes products and sells them to customers.
Facebook is entirely worthless as a company, with 0 products, that is why they have to sell all their data to whoever will buy it regardless of what the buyer wants to do with it.

An example: MangoLassi is a commercial CloudFlare customer. Without CF, we'd never be able to push the 200 million hits a month we sometimes take here!
