Seagate Shows Off World's Fastest Hard Drive

Seagate is showing off their new Mach.2 drive technology which more than doubles performance of NL-SAS drives and shows nearly 60% performance boost over standard 15K SAS drives. New HAMR technology is breathing potential new life into mechanical drives.

It's interesting that Seagate feels that continuing to invest in spinning drive technology continues to make sense today. That has to be really expensive research that they are doing. Great that they are squeezing more performance from the technology, but will that additional performance and additional sales that it generates, offset the research cost versus investing more into solid state technologies?
Maybe if this was a 200% increase in performance, or a 1,000% increase. But only 60% seems like it would be exceptionally hard to justify unless it was somehow tied to a huge leap in density or drop in manufacturing cost.

Maybe if this was a 200% increas^ this + Nimbus Data's announcment of a 100TB SSD in a standard 3.5" case... We reached the point where even capacity isn't an argument anymore. It's just $/TB and I guess that Seagate's Mach 2 drive isn't meant for capacity but "performance".

@thwr seems like it has to be capacity. The 100TB SSD is, I would guess, ridiculously expensive. This would be for affordable capacity, I would have to think.
That 100TB drive is going to start having some serious problems getting enough data on or off through the SAS bus. The Mach.2 will still be constrained by the mechanics, but not nearly as much as a traditional 15K drive would be.

I could kinda go either way, I think. I don't see spinning rust going completely away in the next 5 years, though at the 5 year mark, that's when I think we'll see SSD prices in the range of current winchester prices.

When putting 14TB on a single 3.5” box, the extra speed is important to get data on and off of there. That’s gotta take forever to fill.

100TB SSDs are going to have that problem, too.

That's true, we are definitely getting to the point where we need faster ways to get data on and off of all drives.
