How to Update Packages on TrueOS
-
TrueOS, while based on FreeBSD, is quite its own animal and package updates are no exception. In order to update packages, instead of using the pkg command as expected from FreeBSD, you need to do this:
/usr/local/bin/pc-updatemanager pkgupdate

@scottalanmiller how do you feel about the remote admin app? Sounds like it is similar to Project Honolulu.

I've not played with it yet. So far, I'm not too impressed with TrueOS. It risks the Jurassic Park Effect and it seems to be hitting it. It has installation issues, stability issues, all kinds of unnecessary complexity and fragility that the system it is based on doesn't have. TrueOS is neat as a desktop and just fine in that use case. But as a server, I'd stay away from it for now.
What is weird about TrueOS is that they took an insanely awesome, rock solid, enterprise OS that was perfectly good - and built a server from it that solves no obvious shortcomings of the original, but introduces new complexity and frailty. Why?
I'll be spending a lot more time with it, maybe there is something of value here on the server side of things (definitely plenty of value on the desktop side), but so far I'm not even sure where to look for said value.

@scottalanmiller wondering if it is worth my play time. I'm still going through your Linux guide and it has been extremely helpful. Thank you by the way

Thanks.
I'd say "no", not at this time. If you are interested in BSD, play with FreeBSD first and foremost.

@scottalanmiller I use to play with FreeBSD always was rock solid for me back in the day as a pure desktop system. I never had an issue with install or use. I wasn't advanced but I could get it up and running relatively easy.

It's a great platform.

Traditionally TrueOS has been a good desktop.
