Office 365 Account Deleted While Using
-
In the midst of trying to use my Office 365 account today (mostly for email) I had it not accept my password. This is weird because I have this saved many places, so I know that I have it correct. I tried a few times and then had to have it reset by an admin.
This worked for about thirty minutes. Was online and using email as usual. Then, without warning, my account was suddenly just "gone" with the message that my email address and account name were no longer associated with an Office 365 account. That's it, just gone.
We've had issues with MS O365 accounts before, and mine specifically, it's been around two years and MS has been unable to restore my lost files all of this time. No expectation of them ever getting those back, but now my account is completely and utterly gone.
Trying to get MS support, but support hasn't been able to do anything for almost an hour now. Their track record hasn't been good for recovering from their own system failures, so I'm fearing that all is lost.

Wow... I haven't witnessed that before. If your account gets deleted, your mailbox is in a deleted state for 30 days before it's purged. Are you able to see it in the deleted list, and simply attach it to a new user account in the meantime?

Yes, Danielle can see it, but can't restore it. Maybe can attach to a new user. Right now, trying to get MS support, but of course, as usual, there is none.

Damn! That sucks. Always a fear of mine. Other than Veeam, what are other solutions for backing up Officve 365 accounts?

There are a few. And if email is the goal, you can do it via a backup of O365, or via something like IMAP, or you can hijack the SMTP before it gets there and get it that way. Veeam is the big player here, I think.
I've been pushing for us to leave O365 for months now. It's gotten so bloated and convoluted that we use less and less of it, rather than more and more.

This worked for me when I goofed. Everything came back in 24 hrs.

Here are a few popular ones... but there are many out there anymore and I have not used all the ones on this list.

What are you proposing a switch to?

More than one thing. Zimbra for email, we have a partner that is already running it for multiple businesses so we'd be sharing the infrastructure. I already use it for both and find it vastly better than Exchange anyway. So that's a pure win.
We already moved from Sharepoint to Wiki.js. It's not a one to one, but it is for us in how we were using Sharepoint.
We dropped MS Teams and Skype long ago and use Telegram mostly now. Rocket was awesome, but everyone was defaulting to Telegram so whatever, we just went with that. We aren't that big for it to not work.
OneDrive we stopped using long ago for NextCloud after the last time that MS lost all of my files on OD and ODfB (yes, two unconnected accounts) and had no means of recovering them.
So we are mostly moved away from it already. Email just lingered on.

I feel so oddly empty without any email to be looking at. What am I supposed to be doing now?
-
Okay, MS support managed to restore my email. Thanks to @Minion-Queen and @gjacobse who've been on the phone with MS for an hour and a half trying to get this restored.

Do other things

Mine went down too. So an old MS Concierge person that connected O365 to AD 2 years ago that was"disconnected" ... wasn't.
We are both back up now. WHAT A FREAKING PAIN!

For as much as your guys complain about Microsoft services, you would have thought you would stop using them by now

Yeah, I have had little to no problems. Scott has had a ton (though honestly, this does explain pretty much all of it). But I have fought to stay there as I am the one person on this team that needs the full stack of stuff and uses it constantly, but this even pissed me off enough to give up for the most part. I still need MS Office and will keep that but.. we are migrating off of it for email and SharePoint too many dang issues!

I don't have that many problems - but then again,.. I am at a different tier.

So were any of the accounts using AD SYnchronization by any chance?

So user caused issue.
Did no one check that AD sync was still active?
