Now - I dare you to go to management and say - we have to drop the ERP vendor because they are old and outdated - and see what they say.
Careful with that - management is likely old and outdated as well, they probably wouldn't like that suggestion.
man.. I guess I didn't make the post snarky enough so all would realize I was being facetious.

Could there be another business opportunity to do better than the rest of the industry because they all suck?

Not sure if I can name them or not. I'm about positive that they are not on either MangoLassi or SW as they are more focused on niche markets, such as the food manufacturing industry.
Even if they are on either, why not? That should never be a reason to not disclose something bad.

The problem with that is making some flexible enough to be used in many markets while being easy enough to setup so the buyers aren't spending 100's of hours doing the setup.
I'm guessing that's one reason so many verticals solutions like this is because unless the company using the product has a HUGE pain they can't overcome.. they'll just continue to use whatever crap they already have.

Thank you. How would I be able to go to management and tell them that we need to drop a system that we base most of our company around like a bad habit? The choice to go with this vendor was made a long time ago by a person who had enough pull in the company but not enough technology experience to make this call, and that person is no longer here.
The real issue is whoever allowed someone without the necessary skills or allegiance to do that. The root issue isn't the guy that made the decision, but the person that empowered that person.
Yes and No - Yes because the buck stops with who did the hiring of that guy.. but at the same time.. if the hiring person was fleeced into thinking this decision maker was good at his job, which we assume the hiring person did because they, the hiring person doesn't know enough to do it themseves - now what?
Then you need to look into your hiring practices and how many decisions are made blindly. At best, it's a good time to review decision making practices.

Because he doesn't want to get fired if his boss comes here and assumes he's talking bad about them.

That's the key in all business - to do better than the status quo. If you only aim to be "non-competitive", how successful do you plan to be?

As someone who runs a company focused on vertical market products, I don't think that there is that need for broad market adoption like companies claim. That's mostly just an excuse.

Another is a feeling of being trapped. Horizontals have broad exposure. Use a shitty horizontal app (like email) and every IT guy, every business guy anywhere will mock you for being an idiot - everyone knows how to find good email. But go to the bar, complain about your market vertical ERP, and not one person you will ever run into casually will have any idea if there is something better out there or not. So you never get the peer review or just generally shame that you should get from making bad decisions.

That risk is the same regardless of it the vendor is named.

An excuse for someone to not decide to jump into the market by making a competing product?
Last time I dealt with it, Liquor distributors pretty much had a single choice if they wanted a package geared toward their needs - it was total shit, but it was the only option. Now - if you were willing to spend hundreds of hours building it, you could be a standard ERP solution, say Great Plains (will in the name with whoever you like), then you could possibly end up with a pretty good/great solution. But most SMBs - again, we're talking about the ones that actually exist in large number - where you're going to make the bulk of your money, not the ones that Scott constantly says are the only ones you should care about - but those are so far and few between that they barely matter - want a solution that works pretty much as soon as the installer is finished installing - no setup required...

Moreso for companies already in the market not to make good products. There is little competition and what competition exists is generally invisible to customers. So there is little to no pressure to maintain good products.
Specifically where we created a company around attacking that problem. It's a huge opportunity.

There are REALLY simple ways to figure this out, though. You just get a consortium of companies together and have them work together to solve their mutual pain. If they desire good solutions, they can get them really easily. Problem is, someone inside the vertical needs to be involved and often no one is willing to be that person.

They have the entire customer list on their site... it probably wouldn't be hard to find people equally as fed up.
