Middle of day yesterday, i am talking to my boss and all of a sudden everything stops working instantly. Go in server room, see two of my 3 Cisco switches rebooting. Then rebooting, then rebooting...
      Got home after midnight.
Need to buy some new switches.
Why are Ubiquiti switches so much less expensive than Dell HP Cisco?
Am I missing something here? I can get 3 of
Ubiquiti Networks 48-Port UniFi Switch, Managed PoE+ Gigabit Switch with SFP, 500W (US-48-500W
for the same price as one HP Dell or Cisco switch with similar features.
Do i have to buy subscription service or install a vm to manage these?

Because they are real gear being sold on merit, not crap being sold because it has a big market name. Cisco especially banks on clueless, non-technical managers trying to buy based on television ads, not on technical evaluation.

Cisco gear exists for companies with these issues: http://www.smbitjournal.com/2016/10/no-one-ever-got-fired-for-buying/

            Yes, definitely.

You'll need to install management software for Unifi (Unifi itself needs to be installed), but that doesn't need to be a VM, but should be. There is definitely no subscription here.

Look at the non-Unifi switches, too. They are cheaper and more powerful.

You mean the EdgeSwitches and EdgeMax, correct?

Don't purchase Unifi switches. Go with the EdgeSwitch.

What controller is used for the EdgeSwitch line? Obviously not the Unifi Controller as it's a different line of equipment.

Nothing yet. I believe that the UNMS will eventually (if it doesn't already) support the Edge line.

So how are people managing the Edge line of equipment currently?

Either by command line or via the built in web gui.

That is what I thought (web gui), but wanted to make sure. I didn't think of the CLI, but of course it's there.

And of course would probably be comparable to how they are currently managing their Cisco equipment.

No controller needed, it's not a Unifi. The need for a controller is the Unifi / Meraki concept.

They are standard managed switches. So SNMP as well.

My friend uses the Unifi switches. He has them to power the Unifi APs and the Unifi Cameras.

Generally the unifi switches are for tiny deployments. How is he liking them?
