Oh I'm not saying it isn't reasonable or that they aren't doing something bad. It's more that we just don't know at this point and the two cases are pretty different. But sure, they might end up being pretty awful.

Ah, well for those curious, the big new thing, aside from the rebranding, is that you get full Veeam functionality for up to 10 VMs. Not just VeeamZip as it has always had.
I have not upgraded my free instance yet to test though.

So you start out with unlimited VMs but with limited features unless you are only backing up 10 VMs, you'll get the features of the standard edition?

Holy cats - that's awesome! though unless you can run it from a Linux Distro, it's still no where near free - you need an $800 Windows server license to run it from.

Why do you doubt it? I'm trying to think of what Veeam would be tied to that would prevent it? something like compression performance might suck going through an emulator, but beyond that - I can't think of anything that's overly complex about the app. But what do I know?

No, that feels like a really bad idea.
Keep in mind that deep integration with the OS is why Veeam uses Windows. Things like VSS, NTFS, ReFS, Dedupe, etc. that can't be handled via Wine.

It doesn't even exist in Wine.
Wine is not an emulator, it's a copy.

hmmm.. isn't that handled on the client side? On the VM hosts themselves? Now Dedupe - OK that could be local, though for a bandwidth POV, that wouldn't make sense either.

No, it's handled in the datastore.
That's why Windows is required. Veeam isn't stupid, they didn't cripple the product just to limit their income.
