is there any real noticeable difference between i3 and i5 today?
Yes, depending on usage. The first two generation of i-series chips the i3 didn't make much sense for anything but the very basic use case. Today the i3 will do pretty much everything for the generic office user.
yeah, back in the day, my goto was i5... I'm wondering if I can move down to the i3 and be happy for the normal users.
Probably. The i3 today is a decent chip.

e7270
I've been looking at the XPS as well. But that e7270 looks like as well. My next laptop will either be an Asus, or one of those Dell models.
12" model - nope.
You can get 15 inch Precisions.

All Dell Latitude here and so far no major issues. Hard drive fail here and there. Our Standard build right now is a 5470 i5 with 500GB drive (we still get spinning rust, don't ask) and 4GB ram and sofar works with everything we throw at it

You don't need to, dell is still drastically over charging for SSD in many units.

We've been liking the HP 250 G4/G5 range at the moment for the price.
We tend to spend the same money and just see what we can get at the time make and model wise.
-
@dashrender exactly!

This inspires confidence - they are still using a Windows 8 picture on these units.

@dashrender We had a deal with the supplier they gave us some upgrades to Windows10Pro but I think they do come with 8 COA's

I can't even click on the shop now link.
LOL - the supplier gave you a meaningless piece of paper? You can upgrade and Windows 7 or newer computer for free to Windows 10, even today. While others don't call it a back door way, it's a back door way through MS's accessibility allowance to still get the free upgrade. This allowance is so broad that it applies to almost anyone - like you have to specifically not do some very common things to not be included.

Asus has a nice line of equipment in the ZenBook.
I really would like to get one, but I just don't need it.
I like these. I hope to get one.

It's not a back door. It's the official "everyone can upgrade" policy as open and welcoming and front door as it gets. There isn't a single iota of back door, loophole or anything of the sort as has been covered completely. Zero back door, all front door and official and proper.

These are the Precisions I'm talking about.
http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/cty/pdp/spd/precision-m5510-workstation
Exactly the same as an XPS but with higher specs
The XPS also comes in 15 inch if you don't need the "business" model.

I wonder how hot the laptop gets with Xeons?

Only a low-power quad core model? Probably less hot than the HP EliteBook I have. Between the i7 and Quadro 2000, it can put out a decent amount of heat.

Definitely overkill for normal office workers that are spending 90% of their day in chrome and the other 10% in Outlook.
The XPS 15" starts at $1000 and still doesn't have a 100% SSD in it I don't need a ton of storage!
Thanks for the link.

For fleet, I'd still go with the Dell Latitudes. Get a Dell Latitude E5570 or E5580 to test it out. You may be able to get your Dell rep to configure them with SSDs... if not, you can have bench do them all quick.
My laptop for work is an E5570, no complaints whatsoever. I have 16GB of RAM and an encrypting SSD. Does anything I ask of it.

What good is an SSD for Chrome and Outlook? Seems like a waste of money.

The whole thing seems like a waste of money. If you are buying business grade laptops when they essentially need a chromebook, anything seems like a waste.
