The business line of laptops from Asus seems to lack a 15" monitor option, 14 seems to be all that they carry. Is the monitor size a requirement from management/functionality?

This is currently unknown. But most of our users are older. So small screens, even magnifying them to 140% means less things on the screen at once, which means more scrolling. And scrolling is a death blow. We can't get away from scrolling all together, but less is better.

So then I guess gaming laptops are what you should be looking at, not business laptops. Something with massive screens, limited portability, and stupidly large batteries.

LOL - you were being funny, right?

      Yes.

We run Dell Latitude E5470s, E6420s, E6440s. They are okay. Nothing to write home about but no major issues either. The support contract that you negotiate is key. Get Dell Pro support and you are golden. Usually, if you negotiate it, you can get it thrown in for free.

Yep. We get free Dell Support on all our models and we have two "licensed" Dell techs on staff. So we can do all of our own repairs. Parts come either by a courier in a few hours if we request.

We currently run the HP Probook 6500 or 650 series laptops.

          Specs
          15.1 display (1366 x 768)
          i5 processor
          4 GB RAM
          500 GB HDD
          Win Pro
          DVD burner

I'm simply looking for a replacement. The need for a DVD drive has been removed. I'd like to get an SSD, but might have to add that after market to save money.

Additionally - lighter machines have been requested. Currently we waste time talking to patients and writing down the answers on paper, then give that paper to another person who then transcribes the answers into the EHR.

The claim is that the staff refuses to carry their heavy laptops from the counter top into the patient room (about 15 feet), because they are heavy and they don't want to risk dropping the laptops.

Now before someone goes all funny again - nope, don't want expense of military grade crap that can withstand drops/falls, etc.

In speaking with the supervisor, they believe that staff will be more willing to carry their laptops if they are lighter - at least she would be.

The only vendor that I would stay away from in Lenovo. I am not a big fan of HP because of past experiences but then I hear of people have similar experiences with Dell, which I have not had. So I always try to keep an open mind. As long as Dell makes laptops that work with our current docking stations we will not go away from them because of the cost of replacing docking stations. As soon as they don't we will be open to which ever vendor we feel can meet our needs the best, except Lenovo.

I'd personally look at the Asus Business line of hardware, Dell and HP and omg Lenovo all seem a bit drab, and lacking in performance / price competitiveness.

              Do you need ultra portability?

No, but under 3 lbs would be a good start.

Dell Latitude line no longer has CD/DVD drives. We got the E6440s because we still needed CD/DVD drives, they were some of the last latitudes to have them. We get sent discs still from smaller law firms.

                        So ultraportable. 3 lbs isn't a lot of weight. . .

LOL - my wife's school rolled out SP4's last year. She loves it. She's had no issues with it.

We support a few dozen of them. Our desktop team hates them as they see a ~25% failure/return rate.

@dashrender I've used Dell everywhere. I think I only used HP at one location. I can't really complain. However, I did just get an Asus Zenbook last year for a sales guy. So far, he seems to like it.

I have seen one Zenbook actually still in use today. After we had ours at home for 1 year, and it was working well, I suggested it as a possible option for a Doc. His Gen 2 unit is still going strong. Our Gen 1 as I mentioned died at just shy of the two year mark, and I found many posts with people having the same issue. Really should probably have been a class action item.. just like the SP owners should be getting a class action for a 25% failure rate - but I'm sure MS is replacing them no questions asked in the 1 year warranty period... after that - to bad suckers!

I like my latitude e7270 a lot. I also have an XPS 13 and it's really nice. The new precision line is essentially the exact same thing as the XPS but with higher specs

For fleet, I'd still go with the Dell Latitudes. Get a Dell Latitude E5570 or E5580 to test it out. You may be able to get your Dell rep to configure them with SSDs... if not, you can have bench do them all quick.

I've been looking at the XPS as well. But that e7270 looks like as well. My next laptop will either be an Asus, or one of those Dell models.
