FreePBX and SMS

  • Tinkering a bit with FreePBX at home and I saw there is an option for using SMS service with it. Documentation suggests that this only works with SIPStation and I was not especially looking to sign up with them.

Does anyone know if that function is really locked down to the one SIP provider? I saw that VoIP.ms has some support for SMS but wasn't able to find anything about whether that would work within FreePBX or not. All signs kind of point to this being a no go at the moment.

There is nothing locked down to a specific thing with Asterisk. Asterisk is completely FOSS.

FreePBX modules may or may not be FOSS as you see.

There have been SMS modules and scripts created over the years for Asterisk systems. I would have to dig into them to find something though. It has not been anything a client has requested recently.

SIPStation pricing is not the best, but if SMS is really needed, it is not all that expensive.

  • Have not tried to work on this, I'm afraid.

Thanks, I was not thinking about that in the right frame of reference.

I'll likely have a go at this and see what I can make happen.
