Is there a way to "ignore" a forum category?

Edit: I figured it out. For anyone interested, go into that forum category and the "unwatch" it.

        Yes

Go here https://mangolassi.it/category/25/sodium and change the category to Ignoring.

Of course it means you wouldn't be able to contribute to the development of the Sodium platform. If that is something you're interested in.

I also assume it means only topics posted in that category would be ignored.

It's not necessarily annoying the feed for me, it is the fact that I follow sam so everytime I come back to ML, I see 10 new notifications related to Sodium.

            • Maybe a different account could be used that some people could follow if they like
            • Less number of total posts would be nice. Maybe have one post for feature request and another for bugs, and maybe even a third for additional comments. I think it actually hurts SEO because if you search sodium helpdesk on google you see only issues or feature requests on this page. There is no actual company website that shows up.

I actually haven't been posting too much in terms of creating threads. I have been getting a massive amounts of threads from other users though. Which was the ultimate goal of getting the advice everyone here. I really only create threads upon major updates/releases. Like the helpdesk initial creation. If you go to the actual category the majority of the threads created are other users opening feature requests etc.

Frankly, this sounds like the next generation of that other company where most of us found each other.

Nope sorry, our goal is to actually be useful and actually listen to feature requests people want. Which you can see them being implemented daily. Just trying to create something that will actually be useful to IT admins.

Ads and sponsored products aren't a bad thing. Maybe this is the solution that many SMBs will be able to implement, and can fill gaps SW left behind.

I think it is important to differentiate between content and sponsored content. The great thing about ML vs SW is the fact that we are group of professionals that challenge each other everyday. I value alot of people's opinions on here. You can lose that when you are being pushed sponsored or paid content without that sponsored or paid content being noted. Because if you don't mark that type of material, when you go to recommend any solution you lose credibility. Because people are always going to think you have a special interest.

If we can mark the material as sponsored, I think that would be a huge step.

Well to be fair: Sodium is not a sponsor, a vendor or an advertiser.

Yes I am allowing them to have a category but at this point they are a group of developers trying to make a product that will hopefully be of use to those here. So while they aren't playing exactly they aren't really any of the above designations either.

Suggestions on how you think I should classify them?

They are a vendor of a product in development. The vendor tag would suffice. . .

I don't follow users. Are you saying that when you follow someone their new posts are marked as notifications? Certainly not going to follow anyone if that is the case.

It does, yeah. I don't use it either, but it is one way to see what people are posting about. If you go into their profile and click the + button, it turns into a heart (yeah, that's a little weird) and you get updates on what they post.

They are a vendor just like any other. A vendor tag would make sense. Although redundant as they all have Quixotic in their names, so it would not convey anything that isn't already obvious. But for uniformity it is a good idea.

I could start some sort of crazy argument in a few of the sodium threads.

Say something mildly controversial and then tag @JaredBusch ... that's good for 100 posts right there.

Yup, that's why we have things like the job postings, self promotion, water closet and so forth broken out into their own categories specifically, along with vendors that have their own communities here. You can join and only get updates to Sodium, or you could get updates to everything except Sodium, or any combination of things. We don't break the IT Conversations into different groups because of topic identification issues that just doesn't work. But in theory you can watch tags of interest, but not nearly as well as you'd hope.

What would really be nice is if you clicked on a profile of a "service provider" it told you exactly what services they provide. The Restoronix conversation could have been easily avoided yesterday if that were the case. Anybody could click on @scottalanmiller and see that he's got vested interest in companies X, Y, and Z.

That would be great. Unfortunately it is also something that the platform does not support. Also, it is REALLY important that everyone remember that this is not Spiceworks and not apply SW vendor logic here. Vendors are free to participate and post and the vendor tag does not mean that someone is or is not a vendor (in IT, everyone is a vendor to someone, it doesn't mean anything) but rather that a specific account is verified as being from a specific vendor. It means that the person in question has reached out to GS and taken the time to validate that they really are representatives of the vendor in question. The vendor tag is not to flag people as vendors, but to show that they are verified as being with the vendor that they claim to represent. Very different things. SW vendors are barred unless they have paid and the GG status means that they are paying to get to be there as a vendor.
