What kept you from seeing value in the USG? the price is the only hold back for a small single site SMB. The ER-L and ER-X are just way cheaper.

Is there a way to enable DPI in the controller without USG?

The ER series has it's own DPI.

Right, it is not like the AP is doing DPI.

And neither is the controller in a Unifi Controller setup. It's all in the USG.

@dustinb3403 You don't want a USG. Period. Ever.

                It is a gimped ERL.

For personal home use, buy the ERX.

But it lets me manage it with the fancy tools!

Ya I wish it would at least send data to the controller. The DHCP service has a spot for it:

but I guess maybe that's just if your APs are DHCP? idk.

That is setting the DHCP option so any UniFi gear you plug in on that DHCP scope will automatically get pointed to the controller.

From that point of view, if that is all you need from the router, the USG is a perfectly valid choice for you.

Really I'm going to keep it as my base layer 4 edge device and likely put an inline IPS system here (Palo Alto currently winning).

For you UBNT experts...when do you use the ERL vs ERX? (short answer is ok)

ERL is my go-to. I have many of them deployed. Don't need the switch ports that are available on the ERX.

ERX sometimes for home. Basically I always use the ERL.

ERX for none. ERX for home use, maybe. But I don't. I use ERL everywhere.

No switch, no PoE, more power for the routing. I don't want all that extra stuff in my router.
