My issue is not comparing costs where he lives. My issue is you making a statement like it's fact with no knowledge or proof. Saying that Orlando is SO high for living costs is an untrue statement.
It's not. I said it was so high COMPARED TO WHERE HE IS. And it is. Orlando is dramatically expensive by comparison. And you demonstrated it by comparing it to Rochester, which I know even better is dramatically more expensive.
Wasn't he just looking at some place on the West Coast? I mean that should blow expensive East coast cities out of the water (not Rochester or Orlando).
Rochester and Orlando are on the low side compared to other larger cities.

You say this assuming I don't know the Orlando area. I've spent a lot of time there. I have lots of friends that live there. I have looked at prices there. I have a fair idea of the cost. My family is also from where Travis is from and I know those costs REALLY well and know that no city in the US is comparable. He's not close to any city, it's insanely cheap where he is.
You said that Orlando is cheaper, but keep showing that it is more expensive.

He's in rural north east Ohio. Southwest of Canton.

Not cheaper than where he lives, but much cheaper than the west coast where he was looking

Agreed, but very expensive compared to Ohio's countryside.

Granted, but that's not that I said.
-
@travisdh1 wow that's cheap. Was going to suggest looking around here (Buffalo, Western New York)but don't think we can compete on cost of living.
-
Apparently there was a misunderstanding. I am thinking lower cost of living compared to west coast and large east coast cities. IT jobs aren't exactly overflowing in most rural low cost areas.

I'm not aware that he was. The east coast isn't THAT bad. Boston and NYC are, of course. But lots of the east coast is cheaper than the west.

It may not be ideal for you, but lower cost of living ....
LOL. I don't think you have a good concept of his cost of living. Orlando is SO much more expensive.
Maybe if you don't know the area....
Pretty sure even if you do. Orlando might be low, but it's not even in the ballpark. I can buy a house in his area for $35K.
One of the other local IT guys I know recently bought a house for $30k. He renovated it and is thinking about moving, he'll sell the thing for $120k
I just inherited a house in your area. Pretty sure it's worth nothing.
Well, apparently I'll have some time on my hands. If you want someone to clean it up and do some basic upgrades on the place....

I haven't traveled as much as you, but everywhere I've been on the east coast is bad (mostly the big cities). Northern Virginia (as you are already well aware) is insane.

I would have to make double in Northern Virginia just be where I was at here in the Orlando area.

It depends on where you live Alexandria isn't that bad. Had an ex-girlfriend that lived there.

That's where I was staying. I was hearing about $1500 a month for a basic apartment in a decent area..

I could get something nice where I live for $750-800. You can rent a 4 bedroom house for $900.

I'm paying $300/month right now. This area a good apartment goes for around $450. Renting is silly compared to buying around here tho. You can easily find a place for $30,000-$40,000

I know some rural areas in Tennessee that are similar, but I am pretty sure 95% of the population cannot spell "IT" so I doubt there would be many jobs.
I am guessing your area might be similar?

Quite similar, yes. At least I can get to Cleveland/Columbus easily from here, so I have some opportunities in the area. Not that I'm only looking in Ohio.
