@JaredBusch I think this installation was Server 2012 R2 (standard) with the Hyper-V role enabled. Not a straight Hyper-V installation.

This. What is the straight hyper-v download called?

That's what I thought, but I have Hyper-v installed on a host and it says I'm in trial with xx days remaining.

There is no Hyper-V version that does that. That's Windows running on the "physical VM", and this is why it's never supposed to be installed like this. This means that the customer has to either reinstall properly or needs to pay the bounty for the mistake.

Beyond that, I am now thinking based on these responses that you are looking to use one of your 2 guest VM allowances for the Server 2012 license that you purchased to install Server 2008 R2?

You should have the keys in the VLSC portal.

Hyper-V 2012 R2. It doesn't grant any Server Licensing though. So you'd still need licensing for any VM's.

          Any Windows VMs.

Even your link has Evaluate in it. I posted about this months ago. Thought I don't recall what the conclusion was.

Perhaps it is that MS is just trying to make everything hard and trying to trick people into buying something else, when what they want is the free software.

I have a physical server with a COA for Server 2008 R2. It's the one that has two product keys on it. One for the host and one for the VMs.

I want to virtualize it, but would rather go with a newer version of Hyper-v.

It's always said that. It's a permanent evaluation. Always has been. There is no other version of Hyper-V.

Newer? You never deploy anything except current. Never. So only 2016.

In that case, you download Hyper-V 2016, wipe and reload the box with your new download, then install the 2008 R2 VM using your OEM key. Remember though, you can't move that VM to another host, not granted by the OEM license.

Well iut no longer says it is a permanent evaluation though on that page like it used to. It does not have an expire date either, but it is listed differently than it was for 2012 R2

Yeah, that didn't help with the confusion. It's not limited, though. So the lack of limit leaves it open ended.

That COA is stuck with the hardware, you aren't allowed to migrate it into a VM.

You'll have to purchase licensing with downgrade rights to be able to create 2008 R2 VM's.

                                That is completely false.

You are 100% allowed to migrate it to a VM.

But that VM must always remain on that physical box.

Yes you can! you can definitely put it in a VM, but only on that same hardware.

I have a physical server with a COA for Server 2008 R2. It's the one that has two product keys on it. One for the host and one for the VMs.

I want to virtualize it, but would rather go with a newer version of Hyper-v.

That COA is stuck with the hardware, you aren't allowed to migrate it into a VM.

You'll have to purchase licensing with downgrade rights to be able to create 2008 R2 VM's.

I don't believe that that is true. The VMs are stuck on the hardware, but the OEM License works just fine with them. I've never heard of there being any issue virtualizing an OEM copy of a Server OS.

                                        That is completely false.

You are 100% allowed to migrate it to a VM.

But that VM must always remain on that physical box.

Yeah I was adjusting it when you replied.

That's what you get for being slow.
