Unsolved where to find free hyper-v product key

Can you host a Server 2008 R2 VM on Hyper-v 2012 R2 for free? Where do you get the product key to activate server 2012 R2 or will the 2008 R2 key work?

WTF are you talking about?
Hyper-V Server has no license key.Your guest OS licenses you have to put in like normal when you install the guest. This is no different than when installing any other way.

That's what I thought, but I have Hyper-v installed on a host and it says I'm in trial with xx days remaining.

@JaredBusch I think this installation was Server 2012 R2 (standard) with the Hyper-V role enabled. Not a straight Hyper-V installation.
Which @Mike-Davis if it was, you'll need 2008 R2 licensing to activate those VM's.

Which @Mike-Davis if it was, you'll need 2008 R2 licensing to activate those VM's.
The host OS does not matter (unless it was DataCenter.) You need the purchased key always.

There is no Hyper-V version that does that. That's Windows running on the "physical VM", and this is why it's never supposed to be installed like this. This means that the customer has to either reinstall properly or needs to pay the bounty for the mistake.

Hyper-V 2012 R2. It doesn't grant any Server Licensing though. So you'd still need licensing for any VM's.

Beyond that, I am now thinking based on these responses that you are looking to use one of your 2 guest VM allowances for the Server 2012 license that you purchased to install Server 2008 R2?
You should have the keys in the VLSC portal.

Even your link has Evaluate in it. I posted about this months ago. Thought I don't recall what the conclusion was.
Perhaps it is that MS is just trying to make everything hard and trying to trick people into buying something else, when what they want is the free software.

I have a physical server with a COA for Server 2008 R2. It's the one that has two product keys on it. One for the host and one for the VMs.
I want to virtualize it, but would rather go with a newer version of Hyper-v.

It's always said that. It's a permanent evaluation. Always has been. There is no other version of Hyper-V.

In that case, you download Hyper-V 2016, wipe and reload the box with your new download, then install the 2008 R2 VM using your OEM key. Remember though, you can't move that VM to another host, not granted by the OEM license.
