My wife needs a new phone badly. She may get the galaxy 8, but these others look just a great.
I'm eyeing the Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom myself.
That's the one I've been shoving in her face actually! Hmm, not the Zoom, the other one.... let me look.
It was a ZenFone 3, 5.2"... I thought it was the Deluxe but now I'm not so sure. I also showed her the Selfie version lol, not so sure about that though.

Zoom is delayed for some update. I really want the camera from the Zoom but in a 5.2" form factor.

Isn't that only like $199? Cheap and looks pretty nice.

I've still never seen one of those in the real world. Very rare to get phones that are not provided by carriers in the US market.
Yeah. Most of us are content with the offerings of our carriers. I've had the Pixel XL for about 2 weeks now and absolutely love it! I don't even carry my tablet around any more.
How does that work on a belt holster? Do you have to wear cargo pants instead? Maybe you've adopted a murse approach? Asking for a friend.

And for a phone that is outside the Chinese market. Look at the OnePlus
Currently using a OnePlus 3 and have been since October. Great quality phone, delighted with it.
What is a "Dash Type-C Cable"? Is it proprietary? Now that I'm used to inductive charging, and being able to charge with any old micro USB cable if I'm away from my home/home office, I don't know if I could deal with a proprietary cable.

I'm assuming it's a standard USB 3 type-c cable... the good kind and only kind I will use for a phone going forward.

Hey @Tim_G!
May I ask which camera app is keeping her on android? And which smartphone she is currently using?
I’ll admit that I haven’t followed the Xiaomi Mi6 very closely as it’s not readily available in my local market. As for the OnePlus 3T, I have yet to personally see one in the wild but it seems to be a very nice device on paper. However, there are several areas that the S8 excels.
Since you mentioned your wife utilizing the camera I’ll start there.Last year on the GS7 they introduced “Dual Pixel” technology to the rear camera. Samsung embedded a phase detection photodiode in every single pixel on the camera sensor. This means 100% of the pixels are dedicated to focusing. This allows you to capture moving objects without the blur.
Other devices scatter the photodiodes across the sensor surface and only 5-10% of the sensor pixels are phase detection enabled. Combine that with the larger pixels, and an f1.7 lens means you will get bright, crisp photos even in the worst low-light conditions.
Seriously, these cameras are amazing; and the S8 brings that same tech to the rear AND front facing cameras.Another major point of pride for Samsung is the design, and display.
You will not find a more beautiful display on a smartphone today. This is the world’s first HDR Premium certified mobile screen, and it just earned an A+ from the independent labs at DisplayMate, the highest grade ever for a smartphone. If you are going to be staring at something all day, you want to have the best right? As for the design, they eliminated quite a bit of the bezel and curved the edges symmetrically so that its comfortable to grab and hold. This allowed for a 5.8” (GS8) and 6.2”(GS8+) screen in a small form factor that’s easy to use with one hand. The body is punched out of aircraft grade aluminum, with gorilla glass 5, and edge polishing that has an increased shock impacted area and added quite a bit more durability than on the GS7. Unlike the OnePlus or Xiaomi, it’s also water resistant (5ft for 30minutes)
Samsung also upped the performance considerably. The S8 is powered by the rapid 10-nano mobile AP, so you can multitask with less battery consumption than before. The CPU has increased 26% from the GS7, GPU increased by 21%, and AP power consumption decreased by 20%. This gives the S8 (Snapdragon 835, 10nm) a leg up on the OnePlus (Snapdragon 821, 14nm)
https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/comparisonI realize that the price tag is a bit heftier, but if the budget allows, I can assure you that your wife will not be disappointed with the purchase. As the adage goes, happy wife, happy life, am I right?
I could go on, but in the spirit of not being more longwinded than I have already I will cut it off here. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions that might help your decision, so feel free to fire away.
:slight_smile:TL;DR
Amazing camera, better for fast autofocus and low light.
Best display. (DisplayMate labs)
Large screen with, ergonomic design for one-handed use, and increased durability.
Top-notch performance. -

My phone charges from 0 to 100 in 30 minutes and lasts a day of heavy use. You don't want any mickey mouse cable.

Wow, that's awesome. I think that mine is two hours.

Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom
Why do you think it's superior? Is it because of the camera as you take tons of pictures?

Yes, the 2.3x optical "zoom" lens is a big deal for me, as is the super fast laser focusing system and the low light handling and the high quality sensor. Other than that, it's a generally good phone from my favourite computer vendor.

May I ask which camera app is keeping her on android? And which smartphone she is currently using?
Snapseed is the app that will keep her on Android.
She is currently using the Galaxy Note 3 (I had it first then gave it to her to replace her very old one). She goes through charging cables like twice a month, it's really loose. Poor performance even after defaulting the phone. Weird issues happening... as in the same things that would cause me to replace a memory stick or motherboard in a computer... those types of application issues.
It's also too big for her. The Note3 I think is 5.7, it's too wide. She wants a 5.2" or similar. I seen that the S8 is 5.8"... that seems a bit too big, or is it just longer and not so wide? Maybe it's the viewable screen that grew and not the physical dimensions of the phone? It's the physical dimensions of the Note3 that are too big... how do that compare to the S8?
-
@Tim_G
Oh yeah, Snapseed is an impressive photo editor for sure. I can definitely understand why she would want to keep it.That Note 3 definitely sounds like its starting to show its age, haha. As for the charging cables, you'll probably be happy to hear that we have switched to USB-C which should end up being a bit more durable over time. The new SoC supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 which they claim gets you a whopping 5 hours of talk time in about 5 minutes of charging.
The S8 also supports fast wireless charging as well. I have a wireless charging stand on my nightstand so I can prop my phone up to use as an alarm clock with the "Always on Display" feature. It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but not having to fumble with cables in the dark is such a nice thing.
As for the size, the Note 3 has a 5.7" screen and is 5.95 x 3.12 x 0.33 in
The S8 is actually smaller than the Note 3 with its 5.8-inch display (5.86 x 2.68 x 0.31 in)
and the S8+ is 6.2" at 6.28 x 2.89 x 0.32 in
We did this by eliminating the bezel and changing the aspect ratio to 18.5:9 which combined with the rounded edges makes the phone perfect for one-handed operation.
This means the phone is not going to be as wide, but it's ideal for watching media in widescreen without the black bars on the side. This aspect ratio also allowed for enhancements in Samsung's "Multi-window", so now you can have access to a full keyboard without obstructing your apps that are open in split screen.
Which carrier do y'all have service with?
-
@SamsungTX
Good info, thanks!
That would work for me. But we'll have to go to a store so she can hold it in her hand to see if it will be a good fit. (personally, I'd probably prefer the S8+)We use T-Mobile, they've been great and the best for us so far, so no plans on switching... especially if they keep improving things like they seem to be.
For me, I prefer Windows Mobile... as my mobile use focus is on convenience (not sure how familiar you are with Win10 Mobile, but it's brilliant) and working seamlessly with my Win10 laptop.
My ideal solution or phone fantasy, would be the S8+ running Win10 Mobile! I doubt that will happen, so I'm waiting to see what happens with the "surface phone". But I am all about the S8 for my wife if it's a good fit after trying it out.
