Apple Receives Permit for Testing Self Driving Cars in California

  • El Reg reports that Apple has been granted a permit from the California department of motor vehicles to allow them to begin testing of self driving cars. The market is definitely heating up as more and more companies attempt to enter the self driving car market.

  • The market is really heating up. Good to see some competition brewing.

  • I'm all for self driving vehicles one big question I have are companies like Apple going to sell the car to consumers. Or look at a ride sharing approach and just have a billion cars on the road?

A billion cars on the road? Ride sharing cuts the number of cars down significantly. You only need something like 10 - 25% the number of current cars.

Think about it, the number of cars we own today handles the current traffic load. Ride sharing doesn't increase that in any way, but offers enormous chances for reduction. Whether it is car pooling with more than one person in a car at a time, or simply car sharing where one person uses a car, then another.

A typical car is idle like 90 - 95% of the day. That's a lot of opportunity for cars to be re-used to reduce the total number of cars needed.

So we are looking at a potential to reduce the number of cars made and reduce the number on the road at any given time.

Similar to how Uber and taxis reduce the number of cars needed and cars on the road, but to a more significant degree.
