Have fun with the meet up. I'd really like to come but it's just a bit too far for a leisurely weekend drive.
Just for lulz,
My closest city to NYC
City furthest from NYCBetter get digging!

It's to late this year, but I can probably fit it in the training budget for next.

So now I need a place to stay. Any recommendations closer to the $100 price point? I'll be arriving ~8:30pm to LGA on Friday night and can take transit anywhere from there. Web search tells me to head to Jersey. and so did @Katie when I was planning to drive.
Hm, $100? Are you open to hostels? You can probably stay at one for <$100. There's the HoJo in Queens for $127. It's walking distance to the Long Island Railroad, or you can catch a taxi to a subway. Disclaimer: I haven't stayed there myself.
Not quite in the $100 range, when staying in NYC, depending on rates, I usually stay at:
Holiday Inn Long Island City http://www.holidayinnmanhattanview.com - New and spiffy, reasonable subway access
Country Inn in Long Island City http://www.countryinns.com/long-island-city-hotel-ny-11101/nynyquee - Clean, quiet, and incredibly easy subway access.
Holiday Inn Express JFK: http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/jamaica/nycjm/hoteldetail - They have a shuttle to the airtrain, which connects to the subway. -
@alexntg well I know it is NYC so I was thinking closer to $100 than $200 is all.
The Comfort Inn LGA is $150 pre-tax. I think my boss has the account for Comfort Inn because when we visit one of our customers in Hutchinson, Kansas (5-6 times a year) we stay at the Comfort Inn there. So that would be $135 instead. Emailed him last night to check.

@JaredBusch That's a really good rate for staying in the 5 Boroughs. Elmhurst is kind of out of the way as far as Queens in concerned. You'll have to cross to NYC bridges to get there, traveling form the west. (GWB? Queensboro?) The bridges can get spendy in terms of tolls. Make sure you get a subway pass if it's near a subway stop. ("near" = 10 blocks or so)

Thankfully, he's flying now, so the GWB shouldn't be an issue.

Chiming in under 'better late than never.' Flying into Buffalo, NY from Michigan and hitching a ride from there as well. Looking forward to seeing you guys!

Anyone that wants to try and join via a google hangout. Chat with me here and get me your email address and I will send out an invite.

@Minion-Queen Do you have any kind of proposed schedule for the meetup? You noted @scottalanmiller was speaking. I plan on talking with some of your minions about the PBX solution btw!
Also I'll be in town all day Saturday and available most of Sunday if anyone wants to get together for anything else.
-
The current schedule for the meeting is 3pm -5pm (we have to be fully out of the office we are using by 5:30 or so).
Scott will be speaking
We will have a quick remote presentation by Pertino
Unitrends will be sending some swag!I am sure there will be some who would like to hang out after, Some of my team will be in the city till around 9pm before we head back to Western NY. Other I have no idea what they are doing. Scott might be free to do something Sunday but I am not sure.

You folks aren't staying the night?

Nope wish we could but have things I am scheduled for on Sunday (Both Art and I are on worship team and Art has band practice that afternoon).

@FiyaFly, is this your first time in NYC? Could you take a train back the next day?
-
I'll be headed out of the city and back home as fast as I can manage. I'm guessing that will be 9pm, from the sound of it.
-
@alexntg Gotta keep a good eye on my budget. Really depends on the price of the train and staying a night in the city.

Quite understandable. I'm on the fence at the moment. I'd hate to lose a possibly fun Sunday there, but at the same time don't want to waste money on a hotel for no reason.

Stay in Newark, always cheap.

That is what I was going to before my travel changed to a flight. Not worth it to me to fly to LGA then turn around and take transit to the other side of the city.
-
@JaredBusch Don't actually consider that, I was being silly. Newark is scary. Really scary. Like East St. Louis scary.
-
Yes. Avoid Newark. What a crap-hole.
