@scottalanmiller if they need a good defense attorney, I have a good recommendation (HS buddy who fights the good fight).
He might be seeing this thread, he was just on FB a few minutes ago.

According to the article, he was owed $78K which is a large sum of money. It's not like he shut off service when they owed him $3k.
-
Ewww..... Forsyth County. No wonder they are going overboard.
-
That's crazy...
If I stop paying my internet bill, they will shut it off. Why should it be any different for the chamber of commerce for a different service?
-
@scottalanmiller I'm here.

Hi @jimk!!
For obvious reasons Jim can't really talk about stuff. But jeeze louise we need to get the message out there that a client suing an MSP for shutting unpaid for services is not extortion and it's their fault!

Oh it's extortion, just the Chamber of Commerce doing the extortion.

@scottalanmiller Thank you Scott. I see your forum replying technique has not changed. I always loved the way you break up the answers for multi-part posts.

I mean, technically the Chamber of Commerce WAS breaching the contract.
The Chamber of Commerce is in the wrong from the little article actually explained.
Is he right to shut off services?
Depends on the terms of the contract. In general, yes.
Does he come off a little vengeful?
Conjecture (maybe the wrong word). The article gives no good information on timelines.
Is EXTORTION the right crime?
Not a chance, based on the little known.
Is this too many questions?
Yes.

This is a Professional IT Service Provider that I have worked with along side in the past. As a good service provider they have a solid contract in place. They also would have a continuance clause for the end of the contract and need notification that the client will be moving to someone else, 90 days is normal. They also I am sure have a line about if a client doesn't pay on time then xyz will happen to their services.
Also even if they did provide their o365 and were paying for it etc. Then if you shut this off it does not take 10 days to get it back online. Even if you have to change the domain etc. it doesn't take that long. Even if everything is fully deleted on the admin panel side, MS can retrieve it.
Sounds to me like the Chamber is trying to blame them for a bad decision in moving to a company that is incompetent.

And trying to cover up that they are insolvent and unable to pay their bills. I wonder if the new IT company is aware that they've not paid for the services that they had before, yet. This is why IT companies need to communicate more. There is so much non-payment and always a new sucker firm that will desperately take any work and undercut each other and then no one gets paid and there is a terrible race to the bottom.
-
It also sounds like he is going to end up owning the city. Jim, I hope you plan on suing them for more than just what they owe. They harmed you and your business, maybe irreparably.
The gall of the city and the sheriffs department are astounding.
-
Time to get out of that region. Doesn't sound like a business friendly environment.

@scottalanmiller I absolutely love it here. The weather is generous, the land is beautiful, and the people are extremely nice. I've lived many places in the US and abroad in other countries, and I find Forsyth County GA to be one of the best places to live. Of course, not everyone here fits that bill, but hey, no place is perfect, is it?

Remember who this advice is coming from, he really did take the family and leave the country.
