NodeBB 1.4.2 New Install Account Creation Errors

New install of NodeBB on a system where it has been running for a long time and still runs but getting some weird issues on a fresh install. The page comes up but new account creation looks incorrect and errors out that all usernames, no matter how short, are too long. You can see that there is a problem here:
A unique username between NaN and NaN characters. Others can mention you with @username.

Got in, ./nodebb setup had failed and just needed to be run again.

Nothing in the logs when this happens.

Not sure, maybe a database connection.
