I think XenServer will do this with a 3 node cluster much easier, but I've never actually tested it as I've never had 3 nodes available at once.

Same issues, you'll need CEPH, StarWind or something similar.

Are you looking to do Virtualization with it, or just to tinker and learn or what?

To start with, you'll need to come up with a way to share storage among at least 2 of the 3 nodes. I think the go to around here is DRBD for that if you want to keep it Linux.

DRBD is good but limits you to two nodes.

You can't do it like @scale does it, because they customized DRBL to handle the storage backend. If you really want something like what Scale does, then you'll need to setup KVM with a DRBL storage backend on each node.

What the heck is DRBL? Diskless Remote Boot Linux is the only thing I know of with that acronym.

KVM would need something like CEPH to do something like Scale. CEPH is nowhere near on par with SCRIBE, though.

I'm mixing acronyms this afternoon. Should be CEPH as it seems everything I used to know has been rolled into that now.

@scottalanmiller i want to build a non scale hyperconverge cluster. yes. I already bought scale. I want to use my old equipment and build a 3 node cluster "LIKE" scale.

Ah ha. Okay, well that's easier said than done, but it can be done. You have three free hypervisor choices: Xen, KVM and Hyper-V. KVM is by far the hardest here, so not likely what you are looking for, even though KVM is what Scale uses. Scale makes KVM easier, on its own it is not.

So Hyper-V or XenServer are your options. On Hyper-V you only have the choice of non-free Starwind with three nodes. On XenServer you have that option, plus others like CEPH and Gluster.

Ok. I have 3 hp g7 same model. I want to set them all up as a cluster. same way scale does.

                    Really?

I find it on par with VMware + vSphere client if you use the Linux Virt-Manager GUI... Super easy to me.

LOL, that's why I had not mentioned it. Would be perfect if ready.

@scottalanmiller Right, but will still tell us if that is what he wants to accomplish.

Good point, @matthewaroth35, pm @olivier, if you sweet talk him, he might give you access to the HA they're working on.

What Scale does is highly unique. What you have is a modified hypervisor that knows about the storage, a customer storage layer that is very advanced and designed specifically for this use and a then a customer web management layer that controls it all for you. That's not something you can build at home.

You can use VMware + VSAN (very expensive) or Hyper-V + StarWind (not cheap) to do this without some crazy complication. But I'm assuming that for an "old cluster" you aren't looking for an investment. If you were, you'd just buy more Scale gear.

So you are going to be looking at free. And probably Xen or KVM + CEPH is going to do that and that's not trivial, at all.

HyperV with Virtual Machine Replication might be a good fit.

It's completely free, minimal downtime, but not HA. (No Shared Storage Needed)

And it should be noted that none of these solutions address things like the single pane of glass management, automatic load balancing and such of Scale.
