Trump appoints Kalanick and Musk to committee

The argument I'm trying to make here is that car ownership (much like home ownership) cost more people way more than just renting (hiring a taxi of sorts) for when you actually need the transportation.
Think of how much time you spend in a car (and what the car cost). Most of the world doesn't need to own, they just need transportation on demand.
Which if all cars were smart cars (and taxi in essence) you'd tap on your phone and have a car at your door in a matter of a few minutes.

Also, and your talking to a car guy, one of the BEST things about owning a car is customization. Even something small like replacing a diverter valve to a full blown blow-off valve just for the noise is fun as all hell!!

Sure you may purchase a used driver-less car to customize, but why? Make the "taxi" company deal with maintaining it. Imagine if you could hire a ferrari for $100/day?

Hobbyist guys will never not own cars. Some of these guys have $100K into customizing a 50 year old plus car. So it has nothing to do with $$

I guess I see it different from you. Not only are there "hobbyists", but there are people who love the freedom of a car. There's really nothing like jumping in whenever you want. And it's YOUR car, not some company's car. I don't even want to get into how bad these cars would be abused because people don't own them (see rentals).
A Ferrari wouldn't work for me here...at least today. Plus at $100 a day needing to get to work would run me $500 a week and some days $600 a week. I'm in IT brother!! I can't afford that!! LOL

And it would be a on-demand hire, not a lease. Just like you'd hire a taxi if you needed one. Never buy a vehicle again, the car makers build and hire them out.
What do you need, a truck, how big, ok it'll be there in 5 minutes.
And @Minion-Queen answered it, there will be hobbyist, people who want to tinker and customize. I'm sure it'll happen, but at far lower levels than today.

That's just it there isn't even a taxi option here where I live. We just don't have them period. There are lots of areas of the country where they don't. So there would be need to be a huge change in how people think and work from the current thinking.
Also Farm country.... farmers have to have their own vehicles.

Right here too. Lot of people around us also haul water for their wells when they get dry in the summer.

I can do that one for a onsies or twosies a year, but NEVER for everyday.

But again, why do you think that? A self driving vacuum dump truck could drive around everywhere and collect that. You'd never have to leave home.

But again, why do you think that? A self driving vacuum dump truck could drive around everywhere and collect that. You'd never have to leave home.
So, a car for me to get to work, now a truck so I can get around on snowy days and times when I am working on my yard. NOW I need a dump truck for the garbage? Sounds expensive and impracticable.
I do get it...inner cities, this may work. Get outside the city and the idea collapses.

What makes the idea of "I need a truck to move some lumber" difficult? A truck would pull up, you'd tell it whereabouts on the property to go, and it'd drive there.
You'd load up whatever, and tell it where to go next.

Not at massive scales it doesn't. Where you literally put a vehicle in every area to cover the needs. You essentially do this now, except you are expending your time in driving to plow, drop off the trash etc.

Services like trash pick up are things you already pay for right. Sure you have to go to the dump to drop off your trash. But in a driver-less world, the dump truck comes to you, you put your trash at the street it takes it away.
Full scale automation addresses every need mentioned. While releasing you from the maintenance of a vehicle.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Inner cities to get groceries, fine. You get outside that belt and the MANY applications different vehicles get, it wouldn't be able to handle. Plus the thinking like you mentioned is vastly different than in the cities. We love our cars and trucks!!
And I'm telling you right now...If I ever get my Ford F-150 Raptor that Santa has been promising me, I'll NEVER give that up!!
