I kid you not, this is how the day of posting is going. Never saw what the OP's real goal is. But... what?
That's... interesting. Somehow. I've seen things before, like a guy who created a ZFS pool on 20-something USB thumbdrives to demonstrate ZFS failure handling when unplugging a member, but a production array with 4 PB on USB3? Probably not a good idea.
Why not getting a few cheap SAS enclosures, toploaders with 40+ disks for example? Backup and RAID are both big issues with so large arrays, hope that guy keeps that in kind.

I'm not sure that this would even be feasible. that would be something like 500 USB devices on a single unit. Even if they had 4 USB controllers, they'd be limited to 127 per, or something close to 508 devices, but the performance speed would be so degraded as to not even function.

Yeah, THAT'S the limiting factor here

LMAO - Yes, there are MANY issues, this being only one minor aspect. My only point was a basic feasibility of it even functioning, much less be ANY kind of usable solution. I mean, this guy should.....

It's a myriad of disaster.

Come on guys, I only need an Exabyte of storage, and I've got these nifty PCI USB cards...
Lets do this!

I'm not sure anybody could pay me enough to even attempt to manage that... unless they give me half up front with a written guarantee that I can keep it, and that I will not be held liable for losses incurred due to the [moderated] ridiculousness of such a setup.

Hey everyone! We haven’t officially released pricing for AetherStore 2.0 yet but as many of you know from MangoCon, AetherStore 2.0 will be Freemium. Exact pricing to be publicly announced soon. Hint: it’s going to be VERY affordable (think less expensive than Glacier).
We’ve already talked to several of you about installing the 2.0 Early Release, which we’ll start circulating soon. If you haven’t already talked to us and would like access to the Early Release PM me!
We are thinking of making a choco package for early release and pinging the package name around before it’s publicly available. How many of you use choco?
