It's definitely not dead. It's just struggling to get developer support for the core platform rather than flashy features. It needs a corporate sponsor.

I can't even think of what a "flashy" feature is. The desktop experience its self is the entire feature. . . isn't it?

I'm guessing she means switch email providers... if you have hotmail, she won't hire you until you switch to gmail.
