Install Zentyal 4.2 on Scale HC3
-
Has anyone seen a zentyal smb ? I like the solution, it makes sense, and it is a replacement to AD.
But how often is it used?
-
I've seen it a few times in SW and I'm building out a test environment.
-
@scottalanmiller but have you worked on it before in those SMBs?
I built it on my lab to play with it, and it works, just not sure on the use cases in reality

Use case is pretty much any shop that needs AD but has not existing Windows dependency.

You can still use it for Servers with windows desktops. Eliminates the need for server licenses and CALs. You can still do GroupPolicy as well. I've set it up for a few non-profits before.

I check out the Zentyal forums every so often to see what's new and the development has gone down dramatically. They seemed to have lost a lot of their community due to moving their focus more onto their paid product.
A lot of their community jumped ship to nethserver.org and clearos.org. Both currently have Samba AD in beta.

ClearOS is junk IMO

Completely.
I was a huge fan of it back in the 5.x days. they royally screwed it up since then trying to commercialize it.
I have nothing against selling your work, but they really screwed it all up.

It's rather humorous that I just deleted that ISO from my NAS. I had thought to install it at a NPO, but never got to. Sadly I don't remember my use case maybe for the alternative to Exchange
-
I do have to say, it is a LOT easier to get SAMBA4 services running with Zentyal than rolling your own. Just keep in mind the normal caveats of appliances.

I think that it is an odd way to go about replacing Exchange. If you want to just replace Exchange, why not use Zimbra?

This was several years ago,.. closing in on maybe four or so. And the knowledge wasn't in place yet.

As someone who has come off of a couple Windows SBS (2003, 2008) servers, it seemed like a pretty nice alternative. I think that is what they were going for when they developed the product. However, the Exchange/Openchange portion always seemed to be a little on the buggy side. With development stalled I don't think I would touch it.

I have used Zentyal and had a great interest in watching over the community and seeing how it was progressing, but I did notice the community is pretty dead.

Maybe this one will pick up the slack!

In what way could we pick up the slack, the Zentyal community was the source of it, it should be the most busy, at least I would hope for Zentyal topics.

@scottalanmiller You never know, perhaps you could drive it? - I have tried most features out and the samba shares are nice and easy to get configured. The only thing that didn't seem as stable was the mail side of things, I suppose that don't matter as most would be using 365 or Google Apps (or G office or whatever it's called now lol) anyway.

I think that it includes mail is a bit silly anyway. Why are they redoing the work that Zimbra and others have done?
-
@scottalanmiller - I've heard about Zimbra, that's one I haven't personally tried, have you?

Because all of these packages do that. Their point is to be an SBS clone
