You seem to be under the impression that customs agents are dumb. You would be incorrect in my experience.
Tax rate here is 13.5% so potentially saving $500 in tax is not worth the risk. They can seriously mess with you.

YOu are assuming that the low price would be used. Those could easily be taxed based on a higher $5K or so US price.
For Ontario, Customs will charge me the HST (13%) of the Canadian value of the converted stated cost. So if the server is $2,500 USD, they will convert to CDN and then tag on 13% tax.
That's if customs even agree that it is worth what you paid. Nothing says they can't say it's worth way more than that in Canada (and they would indeed be correct)
The question I keep asking myself on this topic is why bother to declare anything? When you enter Canada (unless something has changed recently) they don't mandate a search of you car.

They don't MANDATE a search of your car. But if they do, that's jail time. Who risks jail to save their employer money?

When traveling though Canada because the route was faster, we got searched - so much for saving time, at least an hour at the stop. We just stayed in the US for the return trip.

It's something like 10% of cars get searched.

We were pulling an empty trailer. Of course they couldn't see inside the trailer, being enclosed. At least that part was fast.. but the luggage in the van, etc.. that still sucked.

well in our case it's 100%! We have a cottage in Ontario. Last few times we went up we got selected for the "random" search which of course takes 2 hours and we are extremely late getting there. So we have NOT gone up there with the kids because I do not want to go through that with a 3 and a 1 year old.

I refuse to go to or through Canada if I'd be forced to take the 407 ETR, freaking highway robery rates for traveling on it, if you don't have Ontario plates.

I have a large soft spot for R620's - they seem to be real solid troopers. Keep em clean, they go forever.
Not that I've had issues with the 720's, just a long history with the 620s.

Assuming the same hardware in both (the R720 do have the possibility of more memory/hard drives), nope. Older generation servers almost always use more power than latter generation ones. Power supply efficiency improved between the R620 and R720 releases at the least, and the R720 will support more power efficient parts (not that they were necessarily used.)
