is it required no - personal preference.
Your boss should've purchase it with the equipment, would've been way cheaper. Also I guess your coworker can't do his job then either.
Guess he is going to need to learn to fish.
It was not available for purchase at the time.

If it's not required - then no, his boss shouldn't have purchased Pro at purchase time.
Oh I misread what @WrCombs said. Ignore me.

Is it required, no it's a personal preference.
I dont see how that's confusing -
But pro is not required. It's a personal preference.

Should I help him out or let him figure it out?...
Give a man a fish . . . .
fair enough, he said he will just run with windows home for a while and see if he needs the windows 10 pro ..
Do you guys operate in an AD environment? If so, to join that doesn't it require at least Pro to be able to bind.
no, we are not running AD
Not much need for Pro then.

Is so confusing configuring softwared raid + lvm during a debian installation.
Its a lot easier doing that on Fedora/CentOS. -

personal preference?
Personal preference to give your company a windows 10 pro license because once you do that gets applied to that hardware and they can reuse that hardware as much as they want on your license itβs not a personal laptop. Personal preference has no bearing on the situation.

to expand on this:
we are using these laptops for at home use for on call and other work related tasks. So are you free to install whatever you want on it, or do you simply want Windows 10 Pro (or higher) ?
personally I want windows 10 pro or higher.
but we are free to install any version of windows 10 we want.Im moving my personal laptop to Linux next weekend
And where are you acquiring a license for windows 10 pro?
Right. You can't use that as you don't have a Windows 7 Pro license. That's for upgrade. Home to Pro is not an upgrade.

Obviously it doesn't matter what I want/personal preference though

The only difference that I can see is that Pro has Hyper-V, where Home doesn't include it.
But that doesn't sound like a support laptop requirement. .

That's crazy. For what benefit?

oh Jesus never fucking mind.

We're just trying to understand the value that A ) You get from spending money on a work tool, that your work doesn't require and B ) How does that justification make sense?
-
@WrCombs said in What Are You Doing Right Now:

Just trying to save you a lot of money. You seem to have glommed onto something but we are suspecting that you don't know what Windows 10 Pro is or does. You "want it", but don't have any features of it to use. That you are getting frustrated rather than just telling us why you'd want it, suggests your brain knows it doesn't make sense but is frustrated for "wanting" and having made a decision without supporting logic.
Step back and think... why the heck do I feel that there is a reason for this. If you can't tell yourself, it's an illogical emotional response.

Hyper-V can be cool, but rarely on a laptop.
