You said you changed the monitors, so it can't be a monitor input issue.

Are there any other ports that can be used to run the monitor from?

      potentially.
SO heres where it gets even more weird

: I can send messages and the message shows up

The user can see the message on the screen that is black?

      yes.
      and send messages.

It likely isn't a hardware issue then. Try reinstalling the graphics driver.

            Maybe explorer crashed?

has the machine been rebooted? if yes, do you see the BIOS pop screen? do you see the windows start splash screen? Do you see the logon screen (assuming is has one)?

and? - ok yeah sure, we know there likely is a total hardware failure - so likely this is an explorer issue, etc.

Don't waste time on this - reimage and move on.

                                I got it.

I ran a remote command to restart the PC and when it finally took the command and came back up the GUI was there....

                                Im confused as all hell.

yeah - I'm guessing it wasn't ever actually rebooted.

                                      I got it.

I ran a remote command to restart the PC and when it finally took the command and came back up the GUI was there....

                                      Im confused as all hell.

yeah - I'm guessing it wasn't ever actually rebooted.

that's what Im guessing too because once it rebooted for me it came up. ..

If the screen was only black - how would the user know if it was rebooted or not - especially if they don't see the BIOS screen pop.

I guess I would have had them pull the power plug, if that didn't work, then I'd have pull ever cord, becuase it's likely they didn't actually pull the power cable.

This is the type of scenario that I considered when setting the power options in Windows... I always set the power button action to shut down, so a short button push gives a graceful shutdown.

I've seen this a few times and somebody commented that Explorer crashed. That is likely the issue... Next time, see what happens if you send CTRL+ALT+DEL? If that launches task manager, then you can file -> Run -> cmd and reboot from the command prompt.
