I thought about setting one up even though I don't have a home phone anymore - haven't in ten years or so. But the thought was to pull my brother and father's lines in, and maybe add one for myself. Just to learn.
But they both have package ISP deals which makes it impractical to do so.

I have a package ISP deal as well, but still the FreePBX would be useful from a learning experience. But unless you do it often I'm not sure what use it really would be. Installing and setting it up once for home use, then (hopefully) never touching it again except for updates because well, it's just suppose to be stable, and we are home users, so we aren't going to be stressing it, or needing/wanting many/most corporate functions.. etc etc.etc
So here I sit not having one.

Only good thing - I happen to already have 3 phones I could put on it.

I don't have a phone either, but a landline isn't that big of a deal. I have no idea how I would go about a 911 service etc though. My knowledge is limited. I'd be really picky about the actual phone though. I'd need two of them.

FreePBX I'm pretty sure allows you to setup 911 services based on the extension in use.

How would I go about setting up the actual service though? I also don't know what would be required hardware wise: cabling etc? It confuses me a bit because i never have really done much with phones outside of pots and I managed call manager for a bit. Not that is needs to be, but I wonder if this is cost saving too in the end
