Is Unitrends Free applicable to the free version of ESXi?
I didn't know that if it was.

They can never decide. We literally get a different answer every time that we ask. And often the explanation contradicts the answer. So we assume.... no.

If you can install an agent - why not? Don't worry about the ESXi APIs.

Nothing can backup ESXi for free via API. This restrictions is 100% locked by VMWare.
If you open SSH you can use scripts to do so under the hood that make a snapshot and SCP it off.
Unitrends markets that they can backup ESXi Free because they have the agent. That is not a VM backup and should not be considered one. It is a Server OS backup.

I've asked about that several times and been told that Unitrends Free doesn't allow for agents to do this. Which is where the confusion has come from. Because obviously only an agent could possibly do it since the API doesn't exist. But when I ask if we can install agents, I'm told no.
(We used paid Unitrends and have never used ESXi Free, so we never run into it internally.)

That was my point - skip the APIs and just use an agent inside the OS, just like as if it was bare metal.

Not working yet. But screensharing was easier and better than Skype. No issues like Skype had.
It's basically an open source LMI Join.me service.

I was super excited because I thought you meant a bucket of parts and empty cases.... Then I realized you work remotely.

The systems side of it is much more exciting to me then the server monkey/hardware side.
