What Are You Doing Right Now
-
At work. Took a call earlier about a system that was running its updater, and saying it successfully completed, but not actually updating. Really weird...
-
Are you getting real call volume now? They keeping you busy?
-
Things are winding down here. Many people are visiting one of Veeam's data centers. So just relaxing for now and catching up on emails.

My product doesn't have huge call volume. I think I'm number one or two priority in the queue, and I've had one call today. I didn't take a call yesterday until the middle of the afternoon. It's kinda nice actually.

@ajstringham do you have things to do with the rest of your time?

I post on SW, here and some on the Plantronics Sounding Boards.
-
@scottalanmiller but nothing assigned to me, no.

That's kinda cool. Maybe a good time to study for a cert. But posting is definitely good.

Yeah, most people here support 2 or 3 products. That means they have various priorities in multiple queues. I support one product, and it's a lesser-volume product. Thankfully, it's also one of the more stable products. It's bloated and needlessly complicated, but it's stable compared to some of the other products I could have supported. I would love to be studying for a cert, but aren't really sure which one to go for right now.

That's where having a career roadmap is a good idea. What certs do you have now? If you don't have it, the obvious starting point is the Network+ from CompTIA as it gives such a good, general overview of things that everyone in IT should probably know.

I got my A+ in November 2010, Network+ December 2010, and Security+ December 2010. I've thought about going for my MCSE, but don't feel like I am in a position where I'm ready to get it. Would Linux+ or Server+ be worth going for?
-
Honestly I liked the Server+ when I did it. It's around the same level as the Network+. Kind of like the A+ but for IT rather than bench work. Relatively basic and relatively rare to find people with it in the field. It was good when I took it but it was also brand new (I had the first one that I ever heard of, same for the Network+ - I took both nearly the day that they released.) It adds beef to your resume and would not hurt to learn the material. Definitely a good stepping stone but it won't do a lot on its own either.
The Linux+ was pretty bad when I took it and got me nowhere and taught me nothing, but I have heard that they are partnering with the LPI and that the test has improved some since then.

I'd be curious to know what the material was comprised of. I'm assuming they talk about Windows Server. I'll have to Google the exam to see what it's all about. Do they talk about server hardware, and things like RAID? etc etc

Quick Google search led me here:
http://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=server-quiz2They were asking questions about specific brands of hardware, like what verision of iLO is on a G7? Really weird...
