ubuntu server shutdown "failed to finalize DM devices" device stays on
-
If this is a fresh install.... Does it happen with any other distros? (or Ubuntu 15?)
-
@dafyre Yes, just installed this morning, so haven't spent the time on other distros or releases. I think the most aggravating part is that it's sporadic. I would like to figure it out instead of going back a release.

I wonder if you could move back to an older Kernel? (assuming you've run updates)
-
@dafyre You mean like a downgrade to 14.04? AFAIK that is not possible without a clean install.
-
You should be able to, there is even a how-to.

I'm talking about the Linux kernel... the 14.04 is the whole Ubuntu version... From your server run umm...
uname -r
should tell you the version of the linux kernel...
Have you done software updates yet?
-
@dafyre Ah, gotcha. Yes, it is a 16.04.1 installation and is completely updated. I am running release 4.4.0-31-generic.

I'm fresh out of ideas for the moment.

@dafyre no problem, too much time on this would be a waste, it is a fresh install. Going back to 14.04. Just would have liked to figure out what it is, kind of feels like giving up...

lol. Yeah. I'm having an issue in my Tumbleweed install... also a fresh install, so I know the feeling.

Ubuntu 16.04 shutdown issues here, too. But it fixed itself after it updated.

It's not.

@DustinB3403 Indeed! Never had any problems with Ubuntu server.
I always have issues with it

@scottalanmiller Really?? I hate to say it but I am really thinking about going to centos for these kind of things. I downgraded completely to 14.04 and it is running like a charm. I just have been using Ubuntu for such a long time....

I only use Ubuntu when I have to. For servers it's CentOS first and Suse second and Ubuntu as a last resort for special cases.

@scottalanmiller I couldn't find a way to mark the post as closed/ answered. Do I need to do anything to shut this one down?

It's currently marked as a discussion rather than as a question. In theory you can use the Topic Tools and "Mark as Question". Once it is a question, then you can go to an individual post and mark that one as the answer OR you can use the Topic Tools again and just mark it generically answered.
