Meraki provides an easier to see map of where the device is as well as remote application installation and management.
Apple configurator is used to lock down the device and get everything to a base level.
Then use meraki profiles to lock the devices down even more, so they don't walk away

How does it do that when out of the building? Some software on the device?

Yes, you'd download the meraki management app to the iPad.

Meraki MDM
What's the cost for that?
I imagine anyone with more than 1 or 2 devices to manage is already running something of the sort.

Free, at least the last that I used it.

Absolutely free for as many devices as you want. (we have over 400 devices)

Airwatch - it's ok. Probably better in a situation like yours when they will have 24/7 network connectivity.

It is not completely free. You get 100 devices free and that only applies if you aren't paying. If you get to 101 devices, you are paying for 101 devices, not 1. I just researched this recently. Everyone who has 400 free devices was grandfathered in and they are no longer doing that. It's like $10-$12 per device per month or something. Getting a quote costs you nothing.

We had way more than that for free on Meraki. But we are not using it now.
-
Right now we're only going to have 4. But it might swell to more if the projects goes well.

I was having a tough time finding out info on this MDM solution.
I think they renamed it, which was my issues. Though "Meraki MDM" does still take you there.
-
Haha, it's a little kludgy.
First it sent a link to reset my password.
Then 3 minutes later it sent a link to confirm signing up.
But throw up a WebRoot malicious warning error.
Ah, Monday!
-
Out of curiosity for those of you who have used an MDM solution...
If you were sending out iPads to be used as kiosks, would you set them all up with the same AppleID since you are using MDM?
-
Been playing with the Meraki offering this morning. Pretty nice.
I have a feeling very few things have exactly what I am looking for.
TeamViewer has the iPad user required to take a screenshot.
Would be nice if Apple allowed remote control.

I have about 65 in service. I use Apple Configurator and Apple Server Profile Manager to control mine. Works like a charm, and $19.99 for server is a pretty good deal if you already have an Apple computer laying around.

Yeah, having no Apple around kind of prices that solution out for me.
Though maybe it is time to request a MacBoook!

You don't want a Macbook for this. The server has to be for the iPads to check in with. Get a Mac Mini.
