Made some warehouse management software when I was 14, during summer holiday
I wonder how many people fall into IT from a development background. Seems like a logical step for some people.
Yeah, it does. Not all of us... but a lot of us. I actually started out as a Turbo Pascal / VB for DOS developer.

Man! Is it still in use to this day? Did you continue doing software development?
The company closed its doors 10 years ago or so, but they used it up to that point as far as I know.
I'm still a developer for the most part, but also an admin (I would say 70/30). Jack of all trades, embedded, Linux, BSD, Windows, you name it.

When I was in college we had a computer "lab" for the Electrical Tech dept (lab in quites of you coudl call 2 non-networks computers a lab I guess) They were always breaking down and I was fixing them up on my own. My dad was a computer hobbiest so I had access to magazines (at the time) like PC Magazine, Computer!, Computer Shopper (remember those? as big as a phone book!) so that was actually how I learned about computers, reading and fixing up the lab stuff. After I graduated I applied to Ingram Micro for their call center thinking I was going to sales but was interviewed by one of the tech support managers. I ended up getting hired, had 3 days of training then thrown to the wolves on the phones every day. Picked up quite a bit and learned both Customer Service skills and tech skills as I went along

I took a test at a local major hospital and was hired as an Anaesthesia tech in the operating room (trained on the job). After 2 years an IT position opened up. At that point I was building my own arcade sticks and had just finished an Arduino LED controller. I brought it with me into the interview and explain how I did it. I was hired on the spot.

trying things out, seeing what makes my mind jump up and down like a kid with a bunch of sugar whos about to watch his favorite movie ( i say this, because my almost 2 year old son, who was hanging out with his grandma earlier, is hyped up on sugar and as i was turning his favorite movie on, he was jumping up and down and had the biggest smile on his face) and see what i love about it! Thats why im on this site, see how everyone reacts to each other and so on. also not to mention, I started my NTG internship yesterday.

After getting out of ITT (that place can burn in hell) in 1993, I took a job as an alarm installer for a local alarm company in St Louis.
One day in my second week they sent me along with their guy that did all the card access stuff. After watching him single finger type in a few commands, I asked what he was needing to do and I took over. The autoexec.bat file had been overwrote by some other software the client tried to install on the PC and I had to put some settings back in that was required for PC-PAK (the access control software) to run.

@wirestyle22 im hoping!

I did not do basic systems for long. I specialized in access control systems which were all controlled by software on a PC.
I also was the only one that could knew how to program alarm systems via serial port. Back then, all the techs just did it all by hand through the system keypad.

Yeah it just reminds me of Einstein being a patent clerk. Brilliant people doing odd jobs is always a little mind blowing
