It seemed like someone on the VMware forums had a similar issue, yet it wasn't resolved. https://communities.vmware.com/thread/574921 I can just suggest the most common solution of "reconfigure it and see if that helps".

      " via separate VMs

In this instance, it is a single VM doing three tasks.

This server does not get taxed very much. Network Monitor is more of a strain than email or file services.

I would highly recommend splitting these into three different VMs then. No reason not to, right?

Microsoft Licensing is a very likely reason.

      Your right on that.

So an offset to this is you can easily setup a linux server to act as your file server. So you can "save" a license here. The other services, Email (I'm assuming exchange) has to be run on Windows as well does SW Network Monitor.

Email is Kerio Connect. Now GFI. They do have a Linux appliance but sometimes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. 🙂

As for fileserver, I setup RBAC in AD and even with Samba 4.4, permissions are an issue. Like I mentioned to Scott, my lack of knowledge could be the issue here.

But you can easily replace SW network monitor with Zabbix or literally anything else, while using less system resources and not have to think about the licensing.

I will look into Zabbix. It's just that SW network monitor does exactly what I need so I stuck with it.

The biggest issue is it's forcing you to spend for Windows licensing which just doesn't make sense.

You are correct. That is why last year I started learning more Linux and create a goal for this year. I am tired of dealing with MS licensing for many little things.

      Just Had a "Duh" moment.

Currently have vCenter 5.5 on a standalone W2K8 server license. That will be going away when I move to VCSA 6.5. This is not an OEM version so I can reuse that license. That will then provide me with the extra license to separate file server , email and SW.

The issue I have goes back to my original post in that I want to move the original fileserv1 VM folders to the local datastore. I want the NAS to only hold backup data only.

My current plan is, deal with current pressing issue of fileserv1 folders, my backup provider switches me to Veeam, I move to VCSA, upgrade ESXI Hosts to 6.5, and then begin to separate "roles" to multiple servers.

Maybe next time I should do one in video form with the movie preview voice over guy.

I'll gladly do that voiceover... I do a strong movie trailer guy, as well as a decent Don Pardo.

@storageninja said in VMware on Azure?:

@nerdydad said in VMware on Azure?:

Kind of interesting in concept. Charges has to be outrageous though because one would be paying for both Azure and VMware licenses at the same time. Suppose Azure annually would be comparable to physical hardware on-prem throughout its lifetime.

Recently I discovered that I can restore a VM from Veeam on a VMware workload to Azure. I thought that was a twist.

The issue with doing a restore like that is it's typically a one way trip as...

Transit costs OUT of azure suck. You would have to switch to doing agent-based backups to get data out.

In the case of this announcement, it's unilateral (With VMware saying they were not consulted). Considering VMware licensing for hosting providers is a special program and Microsoft is not in it this leads to speculation that...

Are they trying to get another partner to deploy/manage it? This would likely breach the EULA on the hosting program as it prevented co-marketing/white label stuff like this the last time I read it.

Microsoft thinks it can offer vSphere as a service without joining the VMware Cloud Provider Program (This will likely be met with legal).

Azure is known to run on custom hardware servers. Unless they've got DL380's or something certified this will not be supported.

Same problem for the vendors. If you are dealing with unpatched spares, so are they. Having worked for some of the big ones, I know that their supply chains struggle to get parts, too. Heck, IBM couldn't deliver a server internally in more than six months, imagine how hard it is to get support parts!

Shit like this just blows my mind.

Parts Bins, internal supplies for labs, and customer supply chains are all completely different (well IBM may have been a gong show). Dell and HPE staff can't just go grab something off the line, with Mfg you have to account for the costs and someone gets to pay (and often at a premium to prevent abuse) for those internal servers.

Parts Bins and stocking those are different, and supply chain for a OEM might actually be different in the us than EMEA.

At IBM< we were an external customer, even though we were inside IBM. We showed up just like any external enterprise customer. So their inability to support was universal.

@NetworkNerd There is an Upstate NY VMUG UserCon coming up 10/5. Based on your recommendation I'm going to try and attend! Thanks!

      Where is that one?

Definitely go if you can. Sometimes the technical marketing folks from VMware come too and answer whatever questions you want to ask. After all, the price is right (free).

NVM, forgot about VMware Remote Console (VMRC), which is the optimized way of connection to VM GUI console, download it now.

I think vsphere C# client currently is VMRC in some minimal way. At least one is still actively developed. (You cant connect to an .iso file using webclient flex without uploading the whole .iso file to the host, however with the older C# client and newer method VMRC this can be still done).

That said, we lost the export to .ova or .ovf easier method compared to web ui export which gives you the .vmdk file as is.

This is what MangoCon is for, you should all attend.

9 days until the big event!

I haven't been told no, but we are short staffed and I seriously doubt I'm going to be able to go. I am going to be there for the stream though.

The shorter the staffing, the more that they need to keep you happy. Remember, desperate bosses are pliable bosses.

Well I am taking off after 12 today and off tomorrow to be there for Laura in her time of grieving. I technically only have 1 more day off for the year 😕

Technically you have all that you want, he can't afford to get rid of you. And you don't want to stay, so you have ALL of the leverage. Literally, all of it. He has everything to lose and you've got nothing on the line. You hold all of the cards. And it is not days off, he can still email you and ask you things, you are doing company training that helps him, etc.

Except that I'm sure he doesn't want to be without a paycheck while looking for his replacement job.

But chances are, he "doesn't want that" less than his boss wants to "lose his company because he can't fulfill his contractual obligations."

That's a very good post that covers information people don't often think about after deploying vCenter. Additionally, it's something helpful when studying for the VCP-DCV. Thanks for sharing!
