PS. I had a look on the guest side of thing just now because that is what Microsoft talked about.

Most OSs are virtualization aware. I had a look at debian running as guest under Xen with a clean install without any Xen guest tools. Debian installation automatically sense it's running on virtualized hardware and sets it's I/O scheduler to "none", thereby letting the host handle whatever I/O scheduling needed. This also makes sense because the guest doesn't know what kind of storage the host is using.

Web servers typically do not benefit from extra space, either. basically web servers don't use storage in any way. But SSDs at least give you faster boot times, swap space, updates, etc. Extra space would give us literally nothing, in our cases.

Are your DBs for your WP servers running on the same or different hosts from WP?

You want them on the same for performance. There is no advantage to centralization except a tiny bit of consolidation that would come at a cost of performance and reliability to the customers. If they are on a separate box there are more points of failure to worry about, more noisy neighbour risks, and huge latency bumps.

      That makes sense.

As for Sharepoint - You don't get that much storage in Sharepoint in O365, so you'll likely be paying for more storage there. Sharepoint also has a number of files per site limit, just something else to watch out for.

For future reference to anyone wondering, I spoke to three different O365 reps today and they said the limit has been bumped to 1 million items so we'll be good for a while!

      That's a bit more!

CloudWays ? They literally let you choose Vultr as the host and I'm actually testing them right now.

How is the testing coming along?

Looks really nice. Not sure that it meets our needs well, though. It covers the pieces that we can handle easily but doesn't address the annoying pieces. Looks like a good product though.

I remember there was a previous thread about a USB stick, but that involved physically removing the stick & making a copy.
Whatever happened to having a "live" 2nd copy?

You can still make a copy of a SATA DOM to a USB stick.

      Can you automate this ?

      Not realistically, no.

I was reading up on this, Seagate expects the price per GB to be even cheaper compared to current SSD's as well.

      So it's a big jump for SSD's.

Now comes the question of how reliable are these when build in an Array.... oh the math...

@PSX_Defector said in Scale Computing Brings First Fully Featured Sub-$25,000 Flash Solution to SMB Market:

SATA is perfectly fine for 90% of what people do. It's the 8% that need something more that would need SAS based while the last 2% will need PCI-E performance.

With numbers like those, ML seems like an odd place to be talking/worrying about it. Also, are the last 10% really looking at a Scale Cluster? I suppose some percentage of them might be.

90% of what people do, not 90% of people. It's a much higher percentage of people. That's why the Scale HC3 tiering system is such a good fit, we believe. It allows the majority of your storage to be tuned to sit on the SATA drives, which are perfectly fast enough for 90% of your needs, and lets the 10% of your needs that need to be on high performance SSD to sit there without needing two different solutions.

And with our heat mapping technology we help to tune the workloads for what is used rather than forcing you to pick manually for all workloads. You can override this with manual priorities, but on its own it self tunes.

So our hope is that the 90/10 split which is a good way to think of it actually makes Scale ideal for the majority of users because they have the 90/10 mix rather than in spite of it.

Just reporting back to say that I successfully reinstalled everything to the SSD over the weekend. Pulled the old drive on Monday, and everything has been working well with the upgraded drive. 👍
