2 things drive me away from a vendor faster than anything. 1. If they make it hard for me to give them money. Require a PO signed and faxed over approving the...NOPE. I will find a new solution.

Just take a CC and you are off and running!

Tried to buy a product direct from VMWare once after they bought Shavlik. So I contacted them, and tried to give them money. It took a week, and 3 faxes... yes fax after 2010. I had to write my CC number on paper and fax it to them then wait for them to email me my software. I haven't spent a dollar with them since.

      Wow.

There's an entire Ready Node selector here on VMware' site - http://vsanreadynode.vmware.com/RN/RN. One thing we learned is that you can go single-socket with the hosts to save on vSphere and vSAN licenses. Just beef up memory because there will be some overhead for vSAN traffic that folks seem to overlook. I know we did.

Most vendors are pushing single socket these days, except for MS. That's why Scale starts on single socket, for example.

That actually makes sense. With got 22core/44thread processors available, the need for more than a single processor is far less than it used to be.

Yes, it's a very common SMB mistake to buy two procs when almost never is that warranted in the SMB market. Single proc of the same core count and speed is faster than two procs and cheaper.

@FATeknollogee to answer your original question, I host mine on site or in colo so far, simply because the capacity already exists for any client that is using it.

If I need to recommend it to a client without infrastructure, Vultr storage node will be the first suggestion for most deployment sizes as Scott mentioned.

      https://www.scalecomputing.com/case_studies/toccoa-falls/

Toccoa Falls College (TFC) is a Christian educational institution that prepares its 800+ students for vocational and professional occupations. TFC offers 28 majors and 38 minors within three schools that include both on-campus and online courses. With the 4th largest incoming class in the history of the college (276 incoming freshman and transfers), the college was in need of a refresh to their virtualization infrastructure to support the growth in students as well as a plan to double the number of virtualized desktops in the coming years.

The public web server along with approximately 20 other mostly Windows-based Virtual Machines (VMs) were running on 3 VMware hosts with an HP SAN acting as shared storage. The hosts were maxed out on compute and RAM capacity and would either need to be replaced or added to with an additional host. The SAN had long been an IO bottleneck in the infrastructure, and with a virtual desktop (desktop virtualization) initiative in pilot already, it was necessary to start refreshing their infrastructure.

@Kelly yeah the HC3 Move (powered by Double-Take) is certainly easier and more direct...

if the xenserver export virtual disk file is a VHD file, you can probably skip converting it to qcow2 but simply renaming the file to match the guid of the exported empty qcow2 file (so it will still be named <guid>.qcow2 even though it's actually your VHD file.) Our import is actually using the qemu-img convert tool which will automagically detect that it's really a VHD format and do the conversion at the same time it imports it to save that extra step. (and also you can use that same "import shell" over and over... just keep replacing the guid.qcow2 file with the one you want to import)
