Elementary OS coming to Pinebook Pro.

Nice, for ten dollars I'd be happy to pick one up just to play around with. That's certainly in the silly money range.

Improved PXE? Apparently I ordered the rpis we want a week early, good PXE would be a great thing here!

Compared to Pi3 this chip = RK3399 paves the way for ARM desktop alternatives without any lags.

I never use RPi as a desktop.

Raspberry Pi3 for thermostat and Arduino for door automation.

Why I am getting the vibe here that it is easier to code and automate with Arduino , is there an easy guide/wizard for it that does not involve alot of coding ?

Arduino is microprocessor coded with a specific dialect of c as most of micros todays. It is not able to run an os. Like any micro it accepts an entry point and starts looping the same code again and again until you pull the plug.
Raspberrypi is an arm architecture able to run an os. You can code it even in python or node.js

I'm thinking about one of these for the kids' bedroom back in Texas so that we can have a multimedia and multipurpose device that we can hook up to a TV monitor but get more general purpose use out of it than we would with just a Fire Stick or something like that.

Raspian doesn't really do much for me, I suppose I need to find a decent use for these and then I'd use em.

But otherwise they're really low cost computers with an odd use case.

Debian and Ubuntu, I believe, are already set on this board.

While my main drive wasn't to get the rPi to learn some basic programming, I am hoping that it will help 'encourage' it.

I am planning to load Linux on my laptop as the primary, and take it from there. But I also am pushing myself to use the CLI more in the rPi than before..

My first guess from how the design looks is that the processor board will be cheap, and that board that has the M.2 slot, USB3, video connector (couldn't see it), etc will be more expensive than it should be.

Yes, after a decade of trying to buy these, suddenly the low power, low cost SBC market has exploded. Now you can get x86, AMD64, MIPS, ARM32, ARM64, FreeScale and more for cheap!

And SO tiny!!
