Wasn't Redhat supporting KVM? Or is this the commercial version of KVM?

This is RH's packaged KVM product. KVM is just the hypervisor, not the virtualization platform (think ESXi instead of vSphere, Xen instead of XenServer, etc.)

Ah, ok that makes sense. So this is an appliance or OS version of KVM. Thanks for the clarification.

Ya kind of like how they took Gluster and made Red Hat Storage. So if you want the glusterfs-server package, it's not in the repos.....annoying.

In scenarios such as these what would be the recommended backup approach: DAS, NAS, Backup Appliance, lower end server, removable disk storage, tapes (intentionally left out cloud)?

Should be separate (physically!) entity non-related to your production cluster. Cheap NAS is OK.

For the average scenario (and I really just mean average) it's Synology or ReadyNAS that I recommend. Easy, supported, cost effective, desktop or rackmount options, well known, good brands, nice features.

That's a lot to have under RAID 6, but for a home lab is fine.

      Why is it better?

It's much faster and you can use tools like Ansible to provision the Vagrant boxes. It's just really flexible and fast.

@Seitan said in Has Anyone Played with KVM-VDI?:

@dafyre yes, you can create regular machines - they are called "simple machines". But still KVM-VDI is more vdi oriented.

Since the KVM market lacks a good, solid, standard GUI management option like XenServer has in XenOrchestra, that might be a spot that KVM-VDI makes more sense than you might think at first glance.

That is why I was asking. I've got WebVirtmgr on my hosted system and it's... okay. It does the job, at least.

I added a header into the main topic list for that. But it is going to be later in the Advanced Topics, section. Oddly, I know of pretty much no standard Linux Administration tomes that cover DRBD. It's so core, very odd that it so often gets missed.

Could it be that most Linux Admin's don't know about it until they go searching for it? ...That's how I found out about it.

You would hope that the people writing the books would know, though!

You're right.. I have to keep reminding myself of that. But SMB's don't want to be chasing down dozens of little pieces all over the place to make these pieces work.

It's one thing or a larger company to have a team who's job it is to do just that - Scott's been talking about using Xen for decade plus. I have to assume that Scott the one man who is equal to nearly 10 normal mortals, has managed to collect and put together all of those parts.

The simplicity of XS and XO are what really give Xen any teeth in the SMB market, a la Windows style, everything in one place.

The bad thing about these groupings though, as we found out with the use of VHDs in XS, are the limitations those packages place upon us.

This is exactly correct. They want some hardware on-site (if they can't move to public cloud for some good reason) and they want somebody who owns the hardware also babysit it. Playing LEGO game with hardware and software isn't what most of the people can do EASILY (and one of the proves I'm right is why products like vRanger and AppAss still exist).

We need some latency numbers from around the world. Anyone want to collect some for us?

Here is the first IP address. A long running ping (hundreds or thousands of pings) would be good, we need the final stats from that:

Exactly. You the consumer have already proven you're willing to pay X, why would/should they lower it? Instead they only care about lowering their expenses and increasing their profits.
